GPS Navigation Issues post upgrade to iOS 11

Hi,

I use google maps to navigate and have been using it for the last two years without any problems. Post the iOS 11 upgrade the navigation has stopped working. Infact the navigation has stopped working even on my fitness apps wherein the device is unable to connect to the GPS at all. The initial location is accurately identified but when I change to navigate mode the screen is stuck on the starting point and does not move with the car.

I tried resetting the location, device and even did a reinstall but the problem persists.

Is this an issue just with me or is this a larger issue with iOS 11. Any help to overcome navigation issues will be appreciated as I need navigation for my day to day work.

I spoke to Apple care today as I use an iphone x on IOS 11.1 and was asked to toggle “background app refresh” to " on " for wifi and cellular data, which I did. This solved the GPS problem with maps and google maps not following me as I drove. Both maps app’s now work. They explained that when restored from Itunes from my iphone 7 IOS 10 to my new phone there was a software glitch and the location services weren’t updated. These have now been refreshed with turning this “ on”. I have put this “ off “ again as it uses lots of battery and data when apps keep checking for new info.

Just so you know, I spent weeks trying to figure this out hoping for an update. Spent hours with Apple technical support all levels to no avail.

Only replacing the wifi and gps antenna solved my problem. The GPS Diagnostic app and the Genius app they use shows the GPS hardware to be "working" but in fact something's wrong with it.

You may have hardware issues with your devices, or there may be some other explanation.

I can say that I used my phones (originally iPhone 7 Plus, then iPhone 8 Plus, both running iOS 11) several times in the past few weeks in conjunction with Apple Maps, Google Maps and Waze and have never had any issues with them updating.

Likewise I know people who drive for GrubHub who use their iOS 11 phones with Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze to route them to delivery locations with no issues; one of the devices is an SE.

To test GPS operation, open the Compass app and see if the reported Latitude and Longitude ever change; if not your device is for some reason not operating correctly with the GPS sensor.

If this is a systemic issue with certain models of iPhones, the service staff at your local Apple Store should be aware of it.

I had a similar issue with my iPhone 6 but I had not upgraded to iOS 11. My wifi suddenly got weak and my GPS was spotty (it could detect me when I was stationary, but not if I was moving, so maps and fitness trackers were useless).

I tried reinstalling etc and eventually upgraded to iOS 11 but there was no difference.

I took it in to a little repair place to have the wifi antenna replaced but it only needed a clean. Apparently there is something on the antenna that moves. I'm not sure of the specifics, but it was fixed and working perfectly within two hours and cost me $25.

Might be worth looking in to.

Same issue here. Started several months ago likely after an o/s upgrade. Today I upgraded to an iPhone 7, restored from backup and to my dismay, GPS still is not working in my navigation apps.

This is incredibly frustrating. It’s not a hardware issue. Must be a software issue that Apple needs to resolve!

If the issue followed you across devices, it must be something related to some app you have installed or one of your settings somehow.

Unfortunately I have no advice as to how to track down which is responsible other than to go through apps you've added one by one until you find what is causing the issue for you.

I assume you've checked the obvious things like whether Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services is turned on.

I talked with 3 separate Apple Engineers yesterday for over 2.5 hours and no progress was made. Diagnostics show the GPS to be working but the apps (Waze, Google Maps, Apple Maps) do not work. They pick up my initial location and correctly calculate my desired route but do not update as I travel. The engineers walked me through many steps including reset specific\all settings, restore device as new phone, etc.. Nothing worked. A Senior Engineer made me run Google Maps for 3 minutes while recording the screen - only to realize there was no way for me to send him the 52MB file.

I am now waiting for a Senior Engineer to get back to me with no SLA on receiving a reply. I suspect this an iOS issue as multiple GPS-related apps are failing and the diagnostics are showing that nothing is wrong. I also suspect some antipathy at Apple in allocating resources to address this, hoping we all move on to newer phones. As this issue continues with no resolution, I am tempted to try a Samsung. I have a good friend who loves it and he has never had an issue. And unlike iPhones, their costs are not rising astronomically.

Hello Bill, appreciate your response but the point is that this is not a device issue. There are many folks out there who "upgraded" to iOS 11 and have had their GPS not working anymore. So not sure if the upgrade fried the hardware or if there is some code out there which is not allowing the GPS unit to function outside of just reporting a location (compass use case).

So technically yes we can take the device to the store but not sure what the response will be except them saying "Upgrade to new hardware".

The question for apple is what is messed up in the build that we may have used to upgrade and is there an update coming up to help fix this issue.

Restore to a complete New phone was already tried by me before posting this issue. I have tried the basic 5 steps and then tried restoring as a new device back to 10.0.3 and when things did not work I tried restoring to 11.0.1. Nothing works.

I will be surprise to find a hardware problem because things were working perfectly fine until such a time when I upgraded to 11.0 beta.

I am sure this is a bug in the software that for some reason apple is refusing to accept.
