pdf rendering as black rectangle

Same here. A black rectangle on many PDF's in preview. But they all render fine in Acrobat Reader.

Tested with a fresh installed 10.13.1 on a Mac mini 2011. Same on a Mini 2012 and other, newer machines work fine.

The 2011 mini also did not show this problem with 10.12 and before. So I think it is some special issue with this older hardware an the new High-Sierra. Hope this is fixable somehow.

Not sure what you mean with "saved a copy of the pdf which works perfectly without the black rectangle" ... if there is no problem with the file and if it renders fine, then why would you expect the copy to be different?

I opened a broken PDF in colorSync utility, where it looked fine (all rendered just fine), saved the file and opened it in preview: problem persists.

Did the same using chrome: problem persisted.

Opened the file in colorSync utility, printed it as PDF: printed-as-PDF-file still has the problem...

...guess only apple can fix this. However, since only early 2011 machines seem to be affected it'll be probably not be high up on their priority list.

Hi, had the same issue with mit Fujitsu ScanSnap s1300 (no "i").

I was using Firefox as a workaround pdf viewer which sucked.

Fujitsu was not able to help me, because my scanner is not supported by High Sierra.

The new profile works like a charm, many thanks for this great help!

Is it possible for you to post one of these pdf files to some place like dropbox so we can test? Be careful not to post any private information.

Hm, I do have APFS. Could be Scanner driver. Have recently installed HP driver for Printer/Scanner.

I don't see anything too crazy but I tend to avoid all 3rd party network and system utlis when possible. When you said 16min to boot I thought you may have a failing HD but that does not appear to be the case.

I have the same problem as well with many PDFs which have scanned content. This is only in preview (and mail when previewing the pdf). It renders fine in any other pdf viewer on the same system (e.g. Acrobat). I also run Mac Mini Mid 2011).

You may not like it, but that is has been the official practice since I can remember: models are declared obsolete 5 years after they are discontinued.

Anyway, I am not convinced this problem is somehow specific to some mac mini or other models.

I can think of a way this can be tested, but I don't have any system affected by the issue.

This is very interesting. I can open your PDF just fine, but I have problems with viewing images in some of the PDFs on my machine....so with this non-reproducibility this seems a quite random problem.

I am using the app papers 3 to manage and read scientific articles stored in PDF format. Now I start getting these blacked out images and first I thought that it was a problem in papers 3, however when I open the PDF in preview, the same images are blocked out. However, I am not sure whether papers 3 is using components of preview to display PDF-content. I already tried reloading the affected PDFs, but the problem persists.

Would be great if some apple expert could look into this...

Thanks! That really did the trick. I am happy it was such a simple solution to the problem! When I chose the original color profile, the image is black again, when I chose my own color profile, the image displays just fine. Funny that the original color profile causes rendering problems in an app specific manner.

what is the app creating the PDF originally or where are they coming from?
