The recently played list is annoying and illogical. It is annoying because it cannot be deleted and illogical because my list is not of recently played podcasts but of podcasts dating from July 2014 to August 2015. Actual 'recently played' podcasts are not added to the list which does not change. This point coupled with the general non-user friendly operation of the app (compared with earlier versions) has sent me off to use the 'Overcast' podcast app.
Previously Played is just an informative background list. Those episodes won’t replay unless you click the + sign. Just Ignore it. Available Episodes shows what you haven’t listened to.
Laeya I solved the problem by installing the Overcast podcast app and deleting the Apple version. Overcast is a simple straightfoward app and similar to the Apple version several years ago.
I have the same problem. There are 3 episodes, which were played ages ago and are always on the top of the recently played list. No matter how many other episodes I play, those 3 old episodes are always on the top of the recetly played list. This is so annoying.

I figured out the actual answer. So from that recently updated page, click on the podcast you want to remove. Once you are on that podcast, click the three dots for settings (...) and select remove from library. Voila! It’s gone. It’s been driving me crazy too. For the record, I’m not deleting JRE. Was just an example.
I’m guessing that the app uses the recently played list to determine which episodes haven’t been played and need to be automatically download.
Unless they removed it in the last update, it should still be there.
