How do I play music on apple car play that's been downloaded to iTunes via disk or other

I've figured out how to play music I purchased via iCloud/Apple Car Play. But some of my music on iTunes was downloaded via a CD (and other methods). I don't want to download all of that music onto my phone because it will eat up all my phone's memory. So what's the best/easiest way to make that music playable in my car? (I should add that my car doesn't have a CD player).

MacBook Air, Operating system is Sierra

The only way for CarPlay to have access to that music is for it to be on the phone. Music that you have ripped to the iTunes library via other means, does not exist in iCloud for you to access in the car. That music only exists in your iTunes library, unless you are using Apple Music, a paid subscription service, which would then convert that music. So you will either have to sync that music to the phone, or you will not be able to listen to it.
