Blank Message Screen at Wake

I recently upgraded to iOS 11(and subsequently 11.0.2) on my 6s and since then when I wake up the phone, I get a blank message screen instead of the typical background. The time will display for a fraction of a second and then disappear. I have tried a soft and hard reboot as well as a complete restore and the problem persists. The only way I can get it to disappear is by completely disabling all message notifications in settings, which I can't really accept as a solution.

Surely there is something I'm missing here. Below is a screenshot of the issue in question. Any insight is greatly appreciated.
