Try rebooting your phone. Press and quickly release the volume up button. Then press and quickly release the volume down button. Then press and hold the power button until the Apple Logo appears and let go. Your phone will reboot. When it comes up see if Settings > Display & Brightness lets you choose the Auto-Lock option you want.
My iPhone 8 display doesn’t turn off or lock by itself. I have to lock it manually or otherwise it stays on for hours! How do I fix it. I have auto lock set at all options and nothing works.

Try restarting your iPhone.
It's a new phone and should not be operating like this. Make an appointment at your local Apple Store Genius Bar and let them run diagnostics on it. If it is found to be defective, they will replace it.
It works fine after I reboot, but it happens every couple of weeks. Any other suggestions? Thanks
