MBPr mid 2015 crashes over night

Hi,

ever since the update to Sierra my MBPr mid 2015 crashes now and again over night:

- sometimes it just doesn't wake up (keyboard and apple light up but display stays dark)

- sometimes it shut down

However since High Sierra it happens more often, in fact every night.

I already did SMC- and PRAM-reset, I reinstalled High Sierra (no fresh install though), I created a new user, I removed every thirdparty app from LaunchDeamons/LaunchAgents, I ran system diagnostics. Nothing worked.

However with El Capitan everything was alright. It appeared just when I started using Sierra and I hoped it would be gone with High Sierra.

There are no devices connected, just power of course.

Here are some reports:

Hi kaz-k,

thanks for your quick reply. I uninstalled the SPL driver which deleted the kext and restarted the Mac.

However the pacesupport.snowleopard-kext is part of the PACESupportFamily.kext which I can't simply delete as this is a copy protection for my audio software (there are four files, "leopard", "tiger", "panther" and "snowleopard" and only snowleopard is loaded so I believe it's the newest available ...). But I installed an updated version of iLok License Manager and will see if that helps. If not I will definitely remove the kext for testing over night but that's not really an option on the long run.

I'll report back ... :-)

Oct 8, 2017 10:40 PM in response to kaz-k

Unfortunately removing those files didn’t help much. However the MacBook didn’t shut down but the display stayed black, keyboard backlight and Apple-Logo worked and I could ping the machine (40-500 ms though).

I had to force switch it of and there was no report after starting it again. The last entry was from 11.23pm and I closed it about 10.30 pm - so no more than an hour.

As I tried nearly everything I can only think of completely wiping the SSD and do a fresh install where I only install one app a day. Pain in the a.. bit I don’t know what else to do. As everything was fine with El Capitan I don’t believe in hardware failure. My guess is that it’s the graphics. I didn’t trust AMD in the first place but there was no other option.

Oct 19, 2017 12:08 AM in response to sronco

I did it! I managed to avoid crashes for about two weeks now!

Short version:

- open terminal

- paste "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25"

- run and enter password

More information here: Mac Sleep Settings for Performance and Battery Life

Long version:

I actually did a clean install and even with nothing more configured than my Apple-ID the MacBook crashed/didn't wake up after only 45 minutes of closed lid. However I finally got an error-message that I understood - "sleep/wake-failure". This led me to above website and I just gave it a try. And for me it works like a charme. I don't fully understand what it does but everything is working. Power Nap, my MacBook wakes up while turning up the lid. However if I have external drives attached I get the message that they have not been ejected correctly - but they are connected and work as expected. So I guess it's just a false alarm.

If anyone could explain in plain english the difference between mode 3 (standard) and 25 I'd be thankful. But the main thing is that my MacBook works as expected after nearly a year of not knowing what's wrong.

Dec 7, 2017 11:50 AM in response to Jeff1980

Hey there.

That's interesting. I have the same issue. Same MacBook model/year. I did a fresh install, however, as I thought it could have been something with the system itself. No luck.

What seems to be preventing this (for the past 3 days at least) is to disable PowerNap on power. Not ideal, absolutely. I was scared this was a hardware issue (more specifically the Root disk errors: "Could not recover SATA HDD after 5 attempts. Terminating." piece), but hopefully that's just another issue that came along with Apple 2017 state of software.

10.13.2 doesn't seem to fix this, too.

Hopefully we'll get this fixed!
