Cannot make phone calls from my ipad 2017

Hi,

recently i bought a new ipad 2017. After starting and configuring the system it asked me to upgrade to the latest version of iOS which is 11.01. I also have the iphone and MacBook Air so i have connected them to the same appleid And used this article https://support.apple.com/en-gb/ht204681 to receive messeges and phone calls on each device.

However, my ipad can only receive messages. Phone calls are not received. I can’t even make a phone call from my ipad(facetime calls does work) because it says that i have to be connected to the same wifi and I AM and i’m sure i did everything right. Tried turning off and back on the imessages and FaceTime function but with no luck.

Everything works perfectly fine on my macbook air.

Do you have any ideas how to fix this problem?

Hey Brenio666!

I see you're having some trouble making and receiving phone calls on your new iPad. You've already mentioned some great troubleshooting, but I just want to be certain you're looking at the right kind of service for your iPad. There's a difference between Wi-Fi models and Cellular + Wi-Fi models, and if you purchased a Wi-Fi exclusive model, you won't be able to enable cellular service on it. It sounds to me like what you're trying to utilize is Continuity, but I wanted to be sure I cover that because it's surprising how often people miss that detail.

With that out of the way, I know you've already seen the article, but I want to draw attention to this section specifically:

Set up iPhone Cellular Calls

Use iPhone Cellular Calls with any Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that meets the Continuity system requirements. It works when your devices are near each other and set up as follows:

  • Each device is signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID.
  • Each device is signed in to FaceTime with the same Apple ID.
  • Each device has Wi-Fi turned on.
  • Each device is connected to the same network using Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • On iPhone, go to Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices, then turn on Allow Calls on Other Devices.
  • On iPad or iPod touch, go to Settings > FaceTime, then turn on Calls from iPhone.
  • On Mac, open the FaceTime app, then choose FaceTime > Preferences. Click Settings, then select Calls From iPhone.

If your carrier supports Wi-Fi calling on other devices, you can set up those devices to make and receive calls even when your iPhone isn't turned on or nearby. Learn about Wi-Fi calling.

Make a call on your iPad or iPod touch

  • Tap a phone number in Contacts, Calendar, Safari, or other app that automatically detects such data.
  • Or open the FaceTime app and enter the phone number in the search field. Tap the phone number in the search result, then tap Call.
Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support

You only mentioned checking that the Apple ID's are the same and having them connected to the same Wi-Fi network, but there are a handful of other steps that involve adjusting a few settings on both devices. If you haven't yet, would you make sure you do that? One thing that isn't covered in the article is Wi-Fi Calling and how it can affect Continuity for iPhone Cellular Calls. It's great if your carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling and you want to utilize that feature, but if it isn't something your carrier supports, you'll want to disable it entirely in your settings. You can do that by heading to Settings > Phone and toggle the Wi-Fi Calling switch to 'off'.

I hope this helps clear things up for you, but let me know if you're still having trouble afterwards. Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a great week!

I’m using the Ipad WiFi, and I know that you can’t make phone calls of it. That’s why i wanted to set the ”Continuity” but it happened to be not that easy. Actually i checked every step a 100 times and everything is set properly. Yes, wificalling is turned off. I even tried toggling everything off and back on but the result is the same. When i try to call somebody it says that the ipad and iphone needs to be connected to the same wifi. The weirdest thing is that „continuity” does work on my macbook air and i can make and receive calls there. What i also tried is restoring the connection settings on both devices to default but also no luck.

Make sure that you are signed in to your carrier and Apple ID, and then, you can enable calls from other devices on your phone in Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices > On or Off, and then you can make calls on your 2017 iPad.
