Watch Series 3 with LTE won't send texts independent of iPhoneE

My Apple Watch series 3 with LTE has been activated and added to my AT&T cellular data plan. I'm able to make phone calls independent of my iPhone but not able to send text messages independently. When I try to send a text I get the "Sending" message but eventually I get an error notice that the text message could not be sent.

I have an app on my watch to regulate my home thermostat which works over the cellular connection on my watch independent of my iPhone but the weather app that is part of WatchOS4 will not update unless the watch has a bluetooth connection to my iPhone.

Your phone just needs to be on, even if it's not in range of the Apple Watch. For whatever reason, Apple decided to use the tech that allows you to send a text from a MacBook or iPad instead of directly. Good news is it works perfectly as long as your iPhone is on, even if you are out at a park with your watch while the iPhone is at home.

Mine started working when I reset my watch (wiped it) and set it up as a new watch and didn’t use my back up and made sure I had good signal and tested it with my phone off after my watch was set up with someone with an iPhone to text me and it worked and I texted them back. Now remember if your phone is off you can’t text people with androids and they can’t text you until your phone is back on. Hope this helps

I had this same problem and worked 4 weeks with Verizon and Apple to get it fixed. Was a simple fix. Go to Settings>Messages. Make sure iMessage is turned on. Scroll down to Send & Recieve>make sure you are signed in to your Apple ID (I wasn’t). When you sign in make sure your phone number and email are checked. This solved it for me immediately. I am now able to send and recieve text and iMessages on my Apple Watch 3 without the iPhone nearby. Hope this helps.

I have had the problem on my new iwatch series 3 of not able to send text messages. I have found an answer that works perfect for me anyhow ! After talking to the wife and a comment her mother remarked that worked for her. And myself scanning the internet and trying a many other options which did not work at all. Here go's (simple) go to the iphone your iwatch is pared with and go to setup and then messages and turn off imessages. Thats it simple my iwatch series 3 texting works perfectly. I hope it works for you all too.............enjoy Edd (edd1958)
