Okay so I understand that there is only one speaker but when I call people I can barely hear them unless they are on speaker or I have the headphones plugged in. Can you explain why this is? Thank you.

There is a speaker on the bottom right of the iPhone and the other speaker is at the top of the iPhone next to the camera (•—) The bottom left side of the iPhone is the mic you speak into to talk and communicate with the iPhone
There is only a single speaker on the bottom of the iPhone 8 (and the iPhone 7, 6, 5s, 5c, 5, etc). The second grill covers the microphone.
Such a shame. I was also expecting stereo speakers on my new iphone 8 plus, just like I had with my old iphone 4.

The first iPhone that ever offered stereo playback is the iPhone 7 and it accomplishes that by using the single bottom speaker and the earpiece speaker.
Every iPhone every made, and every iPhone currently made only has a single (i.e. single as in ONE) speaker at the bottom of the device. And every iPhone every made, and every iPhone currently made has a microphone under a grill on the opposite side of that single speaker at the bottom of the device.

It will be just like your iPhone 4. one speaker, located not on the left side of the phone

You are mistaken. It didn't. Just like the iPhone 8, it had a speaker on one side and a microphone on the other.

I’m having the same problem and it carries over when I try to use headphones or speakers; sound only comes out of one side
You're problem is not exactly the same. As noted, there is only one speaker on the bottom. So, it's normal that you would get sound out of one side. If you're having issues with your headset, check Settings>General>Accessibility and make sure that the balance hasn't been set to one side. Also, try a different set of headphones. There might be something wrong with the ones you have. I'd also suggest trying the headset you're having trouble with in a different device. It's possible there might be something wrong with the headphone jack itself.
There is only one speaker on the bottom.
If there is only one speaker, the left side of the speaker is not working.
As already explained, there is no left side speaker at all. The left side bottom grill covers the microphone. The single bottom speaker is only in the other side.
Did you ever figure this out? I am having the same issue?
What speaker is not working?
Again, there is only one speaker the bottom of the iPhone, not two.
seriously?? so it’s just one section of speakers :(
Yes, seriously, as explained in the device specs. There is a single speaker on the bottom of every iPhone, plus the ear piece speaker at the top of the device.
