Deleted messages still on server

For my .Mac account, in Mail I currently have 6 messages in the in box. If I log on to the .Mac web mail, I have 21 messages in the in box, most of which I have already seen in Mail and deleted. Why are they still there on the web mail?

I have Mail set to not keep deleted messages on the server, and it never deletes stuff from the trash. I can see many of the messages that are still in the in box on the server in my local .Mac Trash mailbox, but there are also trashed messages that are not still on the server. (Between In and Trash in Mail, I have 28 messages.)

Any ideas what's going on? I've done Mailbox->Synchronize->.Mac several times and have also rebuilt the .Mac in box several times within Mail.

There is a delay between the Mail.app or email client used and the server with an IMAP type account although using the Synchronize function in Mail should work. Try rebuilding the account's Inbox mailbox also.

Test when quitting and re-launching Mail or when taking the account offline and back online in Mail.

Well, some of these messages are more than a week old. Plus Synchronize didn't work, as I mentioned.

mailbox also.

Already did that, with no success.

Quitting didn't help at all, but taking the account offline and then right back online did the trick. That shouldn't be necessary, though. More and more lately, it seems like Mail is quite bug-riddled. (For example, I can't import a Mail mailbox, and I've seen countless reports of people with messages disappearing, messages on an IMAP server that aren't getting downloaded, etc.) Hopefully Leopard will improve Mail a bit.

I have experienced very few if any such bugs with Mail.

The problem with the server might be caused by a cache problem or corruption. When was the last time you used a system and user cache cleaning utility?

There might be a problem with Mail's Envelope Index file which is easily targeted.

Messages with an IMAP type account aren't downloaded as with a POP type account. The mailbox is synchronized with the server and if you select All messages and their attachments for Keep copies of messages for offline viewing, all server stored messages are also cached locally on the hard drive but still are not downloaded.

I've had a .Mac account since before it became a paid service and I also access two additional IMAP type accounts and I've never experienced such a problem. Most of the reports I've seen here in regards to messages mysteriously disappearing from the server with an IMAP type account have nothing to do with the Mail.app. The problem usually falls on user error by creating the account as a POP type account with another email client on the same or different computer with messages being removed from the server by the email client accessing the account as a POP type account.

Other than the periodic daily, weekly and monthly tasks, which I run now and then from the Terminal, never.

Nope, no error message, and I am aware of that common mistake, having been bitten by it myself at some point in the past. Mail tells me the mailbox was imported and can be found in the Import mailbox, which does not appear anywhere that I can find it. I've heard this report from at least two other people on this forum in the last month.

Yes, I understand that, but nonetheless, there are people I've heard from who have messages that appear on the IMAP server that do not appear in the in box in Mail. I haven't personally experienced this, but seeing the opposite makes me think that it's not just something stupid they're doing.

Don't get me wrong, I like Mail, it's just that I'm seeing a lot of concerning reports lately, and am experiencing enough of those problems to be worried about it.
