High Sierra: OSInstall.mpkg missing or damaged

Have the following message after I did an update for High Sierra (10.13 Supplemental Update.)

After which I could not use my computer. Kept getting this message

High Sierra: OSInstall.mpkg missing or damaged

Through another discussion group it was suggested that holding down the "ALT" key when starting computer and select the main hard drive. This works and allows me to use my computer. But how do I get rid of the partially damaged "INSTALLER" so that using the "ALT" key is not necessary every time I start my computer.

Thanks, Have a great day,

john L.

The solution that worked for me was to simply boot from another disk that has an OS (USB or external drive would work) and rerun the installer. This may not work for all cases. This route was recommended by an Apple tech :

1. Verify/repair hard disk in recovery mode with disk utility

2. Reinstall previous OS in recovery mode, redownload installer, reinstall High Sierra.

If this doesn't work, I was told it may be related to 3rd party RAM.

Hello John JLC,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that after updating to High Sierra, you intermittently receive an error message preventing you from using your computer. You've done a great job trying to get this resolved. I'm happy to help.

I recommend resetting the NVRAM. Please review the information and steps in the link below:
How to reset NVRAM on your Mac

Please let us know if the behavior continues. Be sure to include any additional troubleshooting steps you may have done.

Have a wonderful day!

I would assume: after failed update. And the author did not write anything suggesting intermittent behavior: more likely he gets it every time he uses the computer.

Hello,

The solution was very similar.

Was able to run the High Sierra update a second time and this seemed to clear the problem.

(backed-up all my data prior to doing this, in the case that it did not work smoothly)

Thank-you for your assistance and suggestion.

Thank-you for your suggestion.

A friend with a little more expertise than me backed-up my data and then simply downloaded the High Sierra Update

and installed same. All went smoothly.

Had not used the computer for a few weeks. Apologize for not responding sooner.

Thank-you,

John JLC

Hi,

Turn on your MacBook and press & hold the ALT/OPT key, then you will get start up manager. there select your disk and hit enter. MacBook will enter into user accounts page, then login to your account and set the startup disk with your disk and restart the MacBook.

Thanks & Regards,
