how to play podcast playlists post 11.0.2?

I used to listen to podcast playlists on my iphone on the podcasts app for hours a day. After the update to iOS 11.0.2, I was unable to find the playlists in the podcasts app, and after receiving conflicting information from Apple I was eventually told that

playlists were discontinued and that there was no known way to listen to podcasts in a user-specified order on an iphone.

I find that a little hard to believe, and I'm really hoping it's not true. Does anyone know of a good way to listen to podcasts/mp3s in an order I specify? I can still create the playlists on iTunes and add them to the phone, they just don't show up as playlists.

iPhone 7, iOS 11.0.2

It doesn't hurt to have a Show in more than one Station. It isn't a separate download. Lets try a test.

1. Create a Station called Bogus1.

2. Open the Station settings (Library>[Station name]>Edit (upper right)>Settings.

3. Settings Choices

  • Play - Manual
  • Group by Podcasts - No
  • Episodes - All
  • Media Type - All
  • Unplayed Only - Yes

4. Add every Show to which you have subscribed, then click the Bogus1 in the upper left.

5. Click Done in upper right.

6. Swipe down the center of the page to download the most recent episodes and give them several minutes to load. If any aren't loading, click on the loading circle or clodu then click again so it brings up the loading circle again - that accelerates loading.

7. Once the eps are all loaded, click the top one and all should play sequentially.

If you do not want your eps to be deleted after playing, be sure it indicates that in iPhone>Settings>Podcasts and in the Settings for each Show, Library>Shows>[show name]>Blue 3-dots>Settings. Incidentally, the Podcast settings are the settings start point for each new Show to which you subscribe. the Show settings override the Podcasts settings for that particular Show so you can delete after playing eps from some Shows and keep eps from others.

Shame on Apple for ruining a useful feature. I hope they fix it SOON. Stations cannot replace a playlist because you can't control the order in which episodes play. Be sure to tell Apple how you feel about this at Product Feedback - Apple

In the meantime, I have found a workaround for playing my podcast playlists!

Make your playlist as usual on your computer. Give it a distinctive name, and then sync your iphone as usual.

Now, on your iPhone's home screen, pull down from the center of the screen to bring up the search screen. Type the name of your playlist, or a few distinctive letters from it. Your playlist will appear in the search results. Tap it, and it will open in the Podcasts app, and the podcasts in the playlist will populate the Up Next list, and they will Autoplay!

Unfortunately, if you pause your playlist and open other apps, or even have your phone sleep for a while, your playlist will again go into hiding, so you will have to do the search all over again.

But at least you will have Autoplay of your carefully crafted playlist for the current session.

Thank you for your continued help. I was able to get the show settings how you said (I didn't realize I was supposed to go into individual shows to see that "Settings" option). I'm not sure, but I may have largely resolved my issue.

Attempt 1: Matching cyberbiker's settings (except not deleting after playing):

The podcasts autoplay, but not in the order I want, since they aren't grouped by podcast and I want them to play in chronological order within podcasts.

Attempt 2: Turning on "group by podcast":

The podcasts are grouped by podcast, but don't autoplay.

Attempt 3: Setting to "Manual" order:

I never see the three lines, and I'm unable to drag the podcasts to order them. Also, I think given the hundreds of podcasts in my playlists and the "ghost podcasts" that appear as well, it would probably be prohibitively unwieldy for the actual "playlists" I want to do in stations.

Attempt 4: Matching cyberbiker's settings but having separate stations for each podcast:

This seems as though it largely restores the functionality I want. It has a few issues:

1) I'm not 100% it's actually doing what I want, since it sometimes seems to do weird things and I haven't tested it enough to see yet.

2) It still will require some more manual switching, since I'll have to switch stations between different podcasts. This is a bit inconvenient, since the podcasts also just randomly stop sometimes, so it will require diagnostics each time to determine whether I've finished the podcast or I need to restart it. Still, this would largely restore the functionality I want.

3) It bugs me a bit from a logical/aesthetic perspective to have a "Station" that consists entirely of all of the episodes of a particular show/podcast and no other episodes. At that point the "Station" and the "Show" appear to be identical, so it seems a little silly to create a "Station" rather than just being able to autoplay the show.

Thanks so much for your reply, Rysz. This sounds promising but I'm afraid I would need much more detail to use them.

I haven't used "stations" before, and what I've found searching quickly online doesn't tell me much. In the old podcast app, it appears that the menu running along the bottom of the screen in the podcast app included an option for "My Stations". Currently, my podcast app displays "Listen Now", "Library", "Browse" and "Search".

It's also not clear that stations, provided it still exists, has quite the functionality I'm looking for. My playlists are created on my desktop, and they consist of hundreds of episodes arranged by show and then chronologically. What I've found online about "Stations" mentions adding just a few podcasts and auto-updating (if it's auto-updating it's not playing the podcasts in the order I originally chose).

Wow, thanks! This looks really promising. I haven't used either syncing (which I understand to be distinct from my drag-and-drop from my computer to my phone) or stations before, so it might take me a little to get this method working, but now I'm optimistic. I'm so happy that there seems to be a way to do this, and your instructions seem very complete. With the option to group by podcast and play in chronological order, this might even be significantly easier than my previous method.

Thanks again for the help, cyberbiker. I've had a chance to try to explore it as fully as I could and while it seems quite promising I wasn't able to get the functionality I want (and that you describe).

I was able to create the station, though I wasn't able to add or order podcasts manually, only by show. I set

Play: Oldest to Newest

Group by podcast: on

Unplayed only: off

I also didn't copy all of cyberbiker's settings, such as turning on cellular data.

After I created the station, the episodes appeared in reverse chronological order rather than chronological order. The app had some responsivity issues and had show icons partially covering text, which makes me think it's undergoing development. Anyway, when I click on one podcast and fast forward to the end, the next one doesn't start, so the station doesn't have any more functionality for me than just clicking on the shows.

Barring further helpful suggestions, I'll try adding the same shows from iTunes to the iPhone via sync (these were drag-and-dropped) and/or wait for an update.

Oct 23, 2017 9:12 PM in response to cyberbiker

Thank you for your continued help. I've managed now, by matching some of your settings, to achieve some autoplaying. Unfortunately, I can't get it to autoplay in my desired order, and the settings are also not the ones I want otherwise.

- I never found your third screen, the one labeled the one labeled "Shows". When I open the podcast app, click on "Library", on "Shows" and on "Edit" I see "Sort" and "Add a Podcast by URL..." but not "Subscribed", "Notifications", etc. Clicking randomly through "Settings" and the "Podcast" app, I was unable to find the screen you show.

- When I go to sorting by podcast (remember, I want to listen to each show in chronological order, then move on to the next show) it won't autoplay anymore.

- When I try to set it to Manual, I never see how to sort the podcasts within the station manually.

So, I've achieved some new functionality, but none that I actually want. It's better for me to keep clicking on podcasts one by one to get them to play in the order I want than to have them autoplay in an order I don't want.

Thanks for the suggestion! I think it's not a good work-around for me, since I usually finish less than one podcast at a time, so I'd have to restart this procedure more often than simply selecting each podcast manually. I share your frustration with Apple: it seems like playing podcasts in a user-selected order should be an evergreen feature that is always as easy as it was on my old iPod shuffle instead of something that breaks and changes fairly frequently.
