iPad 3 no longer gets iOS updates

I bought iPad 3 in April of 2012 and in 2016 Apple stopped ios updates for it. I want to know why the company stops supporting an expensive product just after four years of its release.

iPad 3's, and actually 4's and older, run on 32 bit infrastructure. iOS11 is 64 bit, so none of the older devices run. It's nothing personal, just a natural progression of the technology.'

Your device will keep running as it does now until it dies or the battery dies and then you can choose to step up to another model

Old news.

The iPad 2, 3 and 1st generation iPad Mini are all ineligible and excluded from upgrading to iOS 10 AND iOS 11.

They all share similar hardware architectures and a less powerful 1.0 Ghz CPU that Apple has deemed insufficiently powerful enough to even run the basic, barebones features of iOS 10.

Why would you want to upgrade, anyways?

Since iOS 8, older iPad models such as the iPad 2, 3 and 4 have only been getting the most basic of iOS features.

Older iPad users get none of the newest and coolest cutting edge features that newer model iDevices, with better hardware specs, can handle with more aplomb.

Plus, the iPad 2 and 3 are the only two supported models left that use the much outdated 30 pin dock connector.

FYI,

Just because your iPad 3 is no longer able to upgrade to the latest iOS doesn't mean your iPad 3 is suddenly useless.

Your iPad 3 will work as it always has and the apps you have installed on it will continue to update and receive some level of app updates relevent to your current iOS.

You have had four years of iOS upgrades and updates.

Your iPad 3 will still do everything it does now and you will, get, at least, another full year, perhaps two, if you decide you want to wait longer to get a new or newer iPad model.

Your iPad 3 is NOT, suddenly, becoming obsolete or useless.

So, your options are really keep using your iPad 3 or purchase a new iPad if you feel you need or want to.

Your current iPad 3 will still work and continue to receive app updates until sometime through this Fall 2017, when, with the recent introduction of iOS 11, ALL support for older 32 bit iDevices and any iOS 32 bit apps will come to a final end.

Your iPad 3 will still work and function as it always has, but will no longer receive any more app updates after the Fall of 2017.

The final app updates your iPad 3 will receive will be its last!

Your iPad 3 should STILL be receiving app updates, currently, but look for this to end sometime soon.

This is why Apple introduced the new, lower cost 2017 iPad 5 model, in April

Apple is trying to get older iPad 2, 3, 4 and 1st gen Mini iPad users to upgrade to more modern iPad hardware in anticipation of the recent introduction/release of iOS 11, which WILL render all older 32 bit iDevices obsolete.

Good Luck to You!

Thank you so much for the detailed response. I completely understand the hardware part and the need to upgrade to a newer one if one wants latest features and capabilities. My only concern is security, as these older models will no longer be receiving any security updates even for apps created by Apple. Apple seldom releases updates for their own apps. Most of the update come with a newer version of iOS. Considering this, even though older models (and I am not referring to very old models) are still usable, one may feel more vulnerable to ever increasing security threats.

iOS is STILL a sandboxed OS.

So, threats are still minimal.

Even with some of the newer Bluetooth security threats, it has NOT really been established whether any older iOS versions are really vulnerable or not.

As long as an iDevice is NOT jailbroken, I see no reason to worry about impending security issues to iOS.

My wife and I have been happily using our iPad 2 and 3 models, running iOS 9.3.5, for well over a year ,now, with no actual threats to the security of iOS, to date.

Personally, until such time as a real security breach into older iOS versions is actually known and active in the wild, there is no real reason to fear the worst.

Good Luck to You!

a computer is very open it support hosting databases and ftp and webpages and all sorts of stuff where other people on the internet can access the computer and use the provided services

a computer is very open in terms of installing new software you can install from a mail or from a site or an usb stick

an iOS device offer not services other people on the internet can access an iOS device can only have installed any sort of software from apples app store (unless one jailbroke it)

so there really is not a wide range of security hole possibilities apple needs to patch, the biggest threat these days to users is phishing popups where the user themselves end up providing their appleID and password to the phishing crooks and it's not really something which can be fixed in software.
