Mail unexpectedly quits on launch macOS Sierra (10.12.6) on a late 2015 iMac

Problem started happening well after last software update. My Mail program pulls in accounts from Comcast and Gmail. First problem was that it started to crash when I searched for an old email (using the search box within Mail), and then seemed to crash when I scrolled down (through old emails) in the inbox. I "rebuilt" the Comcast inbox, which had a huge number of old messages in it, and thought the problem got better. That was last week. Now the program crashes before it even opens fully. Thoughts?

Do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.

Quit Mail.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.

Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

If that doesn’t solve it repeat the above using Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.

  • Take back of all mails in V4 folder : Method to copy mails in V4 folder .
  • Click on Go on top menu bar , hold option key click on > library > select mail folder > right click on mail folder there itself > click on copy mail > right click on extreme right hand side in column B , that is below persistence info.plist > click on paste item .

Entire mails are copied to V4 folder .

For El Capitan - the folder will be V3 , and for OSX Yosemite the folder will be V2

Go to the corrupted IMAP account > open system preferences > click on internet accounts > select the account that has to be deleted & click on minus sign .

Configure new IMAP account , go to top menu bar , file > import mail boxes > import data from > select apple mail > click on continue > select the back drop folder then choose new .

When new IMAP account is opened , a new folder with all mails will appear in the mail side bar .You can rename the folder .

Hi thanks for that helpful post.

I tried it with both folders but Mail still gives me a spinning beach ball after being open for about a minute. If I leave it, the app will "unexpectedly quit".

I really really want to avoid tygb's offered solution if I can.

I don't know what's happened to start this... it was fine yesterday!

Is there anything else that can be tried? Thanks.

Try running this program in your normal account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

    Hi Eric,

    Thanks again.

Weird... Mail sorted itself out without me doing anything other than shutdown rather than restart.

I did however click the cleanup button, which got rid of something!

TBH, I'd rather uninstall Mail then Dr Cleaner..... a really useful app that restores disc space and memory. What's not to like?

PS tried to give Help Points but can't, not my thread! Thanks anyway.
