Running Adobe CS5 in High Sierra

I have been working round the various little problems I encounter when running Illustrator (part of the Adobe CS5 package), whilst using my Sierra software on my iMac (late 2013).

However since (some may say 'foolishly') updating my OSX to High Sierra, my programme 'crashes' etc when using Illustrator are getting beyond a joke. When I go to change a font: it crashes, when I want to change my print mode: it crashes, ifI take more than a few seconds to change the document set-up: it crashes!

When I updated my software to High Sierra, my system told me to download a legacy version of Java, to enable my (admittedly) old version of CS5 to work with my spanking new High Sierra, but even though I did this, it still crashes.

I really don't want to update my Adobe package to the latest version which is a monthly subscription package held in the cloud, as I paid enough for my CD-Rom version of CS5 and can't justify the monthly amount to have a few more bells and whistles, which I won't use.

Can someone please help me and direct me to a site where I can help sort this frustrating problem out?

Thank you

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.2), Intel based

Before doing any sort of major upgrade to your OS you should check whether your third party apps are compatible

with the latest OS. Roaring apps is a site that is often recommended here, from the screenshot below you can see that Illustrator CS5 is fine with High Sierra, but Illustrator CS5.1 has not data as yet. If you can't read the screenshot just click and drag onto Preview to open it up.

If it was working in Sierra then it should be running in High Sierra, my Adobe products haven't been affected by the upgrade.

Sierra would have needed the Legacy Java Runtime to open CS5 so you should have had it already installed, just to be sure this is the download you want, Download Java for OS X 2015-001 download and double-click to install, so you might want to try that again.

If that doesn't work then we would like to see the output of an Etrecheck report, http://etrecheck.com/

this is little app that gives a snapshot of what is running on your mac (no personal info is listed) and can help with diagnosing problems. so download, install and share the report here.

You aren't going to be able to "sort this out". You're going to have to either change or upgrade your CS5 or you're going to have to revert to Sierra.

Bear in mind that if you don't have a backup of your system prior to upgrading to HS you are going to have to go back to Mavericks or earlier to be able to install CS5, you can then upgrade the OS back to Sierra. Although CS5 will run under Sierra you aren't going to be able to install it under it.

I have a lot of customers with this issue and there's no solution, ever, to using legacy software with a new OS that doesn't support it - unless you aren't a regular user and don't mind having your software on a different startup disk running an older OS and boot into that only when you need to use it.

not that it'll help, - just saying... (link to discussion);

Re: Is Adobe Photoshop CS5 compatible with macOS High Sierra?

Perhaps "Affinity Designer" could be a nice alternative for you? (didn't look into that app yet, but "Affinity Photo" looks like a nice alternative to Adobe' Photoshop CS5 for me...)

I also don't like Adobe's subscription-model...

I hope you're problem will be solved.

Best of luck!

FWIW, Adobe won't support anything that is not CC or a

currently available stand alone app (Elements, Lightroom6, etc.)

Any previous CS is quite literally dead in the eyes of Adobe.

It may be time to start considering alternatives which are likely

better than the 7 year old software you are using and likely

even cheaper.

Also, in terms of software developers, it is their responsibility to

keep things working with operating system upgrades. If they choose

not to, that is their problem.

Thanks for the information and it is a shame that Adobe's Developers don't seem bothered in keeping their (admittedly old) CS5 Software working with the new upgrades, but I can understand that they are a business and keen to get us punters to shell out money on newer versions. To work round this problem, I am now using Affinity Design instead of Illustrator and it seems to be working fine

Thank you Eau Rouge,

I re-downloaded the Legacy Java Runtime, following the link you supplied. But It didn't make any difference.

So I downloaded and installed the Etrecheck as you suggested and its' report is listed here. I would be grateful of any further help you may be able to give me, once you've read the following:

EtreCheck version: 3.4.6 (460)

Report generated 2017-10-12 13:12:34

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 3:00

Performance: Good

Problem: Apps are crashing

Description:

Since updating my (late 2013) iMac to OSX High Sierra, my copy of Adobe Illustrator (part of the CS5) suite keeps crashing. If I try to change the font: IT CRASHES, if I try to change the document settings: IT CRASHES.

I have downloaded the Legacy version of Java as instructed, but the above problems still happen. Similar problems happened (sporadically) when I was running El Capitan and Sierra as well, though not as regularly as they are now.
