Unlocked iPhone 8 plus

Hi

I’ve just purchased an iPhone 8 plus at Best Buy in Portland,Maine because the next door Apple store was packed and the representative advised me that it was the same.

Well, I asked the Best Buy seller that I wanted an iPhone unlocked and I paid the full price for it. Now my iPhone was tested with a AT&T SIM card but when I try with a T-mobile one it doesn’t recognize it.

Any help on how to find out if my iPhone is really unlocked?

Thanks.

In this type of case, there are no ideal solutions and sometimes it is a matter of luck.

The best option if you are still within the return window is to take the phone back and pay the restocking fee. It is painful but better than the alternatives.

If for any reason that does not work, your next best option is to call the store manager directly, explain the situation and ask for an accommodation. Here it really is a question of being persuasive and effectively you have no realistic leverage. Honey will work better than vinegar as Best Buy would prevail in any dispute resolution process. If you fail at the store level you could escalate to the regional manager level (do so in writing if you do) but that is a long shot.

Apple and your carrier will not assist in the matter.

Best of luck in getting a good outcome.

It is probably locked. To make sure, find out your IMEI of your phone and verify it in a third party website. To find your IMEI, follow the link below.

Best Buy does not sell unlocked iPhones.

iPhones from Best Buy can be activated with any U.S. carrier, but will lock to that carrier on activation.

If it was tested with AT&T and actvated, it is now locked to AT&T, and only AT&T can unlock it.

In the U.S. only Apple sells truly unlocked iPhones that will not lock to any carrier.
