That is an understatement!

I've always called it the Sidebar because that is what it is, and yes it is a huge waste of space and shockingly bad User Interface design, especially on laptops with limited screen space.

Pages '09 has a much smaller tabbed Inspector which can be moved around, individual tabs dragged out and can be completely relocated to a second monitor which is impossible in the "New! Improved!" Pages 5 & 6.

Peter, this must be one of those which-way-is-your-brain-wired issues. That tiny Inspector in the old Pages always kind of bothered me. It seemed too small and fiddly and loaded with little knobs and switches that I would never, ever use. (That would be something to do with the 100-plus missing features, I reckon.) Anyway I like the new thing better — and it's easy enough to banish when it isn't wanted.

How many screens do you have? If you have trouble seeing what you are doing because the Inspector is too small, how do you cope when your document is too small?

How do you get a clean clear view of the document you are working on at reasonable size? I can work with just my document (showing both left and right pages) on one very large monitor and the Inspector where I want it on my second palette monitor.

Pages 5 & 6 are a huge waste of space and are useless without the sidebar open and hiding, showing it all the time is a huge waste of time. Especially as the "contextual" UI is bugger all contextual.

Pages '09 is an excellent example of rational breakdown of document and formatting work from the big down to the small, left to right.

Here is an example of how I can work in Pages '09.

Just for this forum I have put the (several) tabs of the Inspector on the same screen as my work but I usually work with them on my 2nd monitor so it doesn't distract me from my work.

This is what it looks like spread across 1 and a bit monitors.

Normally I open all the tabs on the Inspector for quick access.

I could show how I work across 2 documents both side by side with no Sidebar attached to either and all my key Text formatting etc on the Toolbar, which is a nightmare on my MacBook Pro using Pages 6.3.

That's pretty cool! My visual workspace tends to look like this:

I'm not really sure why I keep the toolbar visible. Because I like the colors, I suspect.
