"Rest finger to open" is inconsistent in iOS 11, iPhone SE & 8

I've had "Rest finger to open" accessibility setting on for the last few years for each new iPhone that I've upgraded to each year. Since I've been using it for a while, I know how it's supposed to work. With "Raise to wake" also on, you just lift the phone and set your finger on the home button (without pressing the button) to unlock using TouchID. I typically have my finger on the home button while I raise to wake. No issues in the past.

On both an iPhone 8 and iPhone SE, I'm experiencing inconsistent behavior in which the phone does not unlock, as expected. About 20% of the time, which is enough for me to lose confidence in the feature, I'll have my finger on the home button while raising to wake. The screen turns on but nothing happens. If TouchID doesn't recognize my fingerprint, the text at the bottom shakes and says "try again", but that doesn't happen when I experience this issue.

I've never had any issues on my iPhone SE until iOS 11 was released and I've been experiencing this same behavior with 11.0, 11.01, 11.02 and now 11.03. With an iPhone 8, which was setup as new (not from backup), I was seeing this same issue about the same percentage of the time. I no longer have the iPhone 8.

I have also tried resetting my iPhone SE and setting up as new, changing nothing other than this setting and still get the issue, which leads me to believe it's iOS 11 related.

Anyone else having similar issues?

iPhone SE, iOS 11.0.3

Same problem here! But I think I managed to found some workaround!

Try this:

1) Delete all finger prints (MAYBE this one is not necessary)

2) Turn OFF your passcode (this one is VERY important)

3) Add new finger print as usual

4) After that you will be forced to create new 6-digit passcode, do it

5) Then you may change passcode to 4-digit, as I did, and add more finger prints

6) Done!

Same issue here happening on my iPhone 8 with inconsistent rest to open. I can confirm that the issues does not happen on iPhone 7/Plus, iPhone 6s/Plus. All are on 11.0.3. Issue has been happening since 11.0 on my iPhone 8.

If my thumb is on the home button before the raise to wake feature is activated, it will not pick up that my finger is already there and prompt me to press home to unlock. Occasionally, even with the screen on, I still have to click the home button to unlock. Again, this is only happens on my iPhone 8 and another coworker's iPhone 8 Plus. Been quite annoying.

I am having this issue on an iPad Pro 10.5. It is a replacement unit. Mine is not working at all. Rest finger to open is working like a charm on iPhone 6s Plus. I have to use the sleep/wake button or press the home button which takes me straight to home page skipping the notifications screen. I am on iOS 11.1. I have tried all the solutions....nothing works. Took it to the Genius Bar. Got response stating it is not supposed to work on iPad Pro like it works on the phone. Inspite of telling them it works perfect on other iPad pro’s at home. I am hoping it is a software issue.

What did you need the 6 digit pin for?

Does rest finger to open work fast and reliably WITH double click home button in wallet enabled when you have a 6 digit pin?

I use a 4 digit pin. If I have the double click option in wallet enabled, rest to open is slow and inconsistent. With that option turned off, it’s opens instantly and consistently. WAY better than Face ID!! 😀
