scrolling down from the top of the screen to show messages

Hello,

Before iOS 11, when I scrolled down from the top of my screen when my iPhone was unlocked, I could see someone’s iMessage without actually opening the messages app. I always had the privacy on and it never showed me a preview unless I scrolled to the Notification Center when my phone was unlocked. When it was locked it would say the normal “iMessage” and same thing when the banner would show when it’s unlocked.

In iOS 10 and earlier, the same thing would happen, however when I did open the Notification Center while my phone was unlocked, I could see the message preview no matter if it was a text message or an iMessage from an iPhone user.

This was a very convenient way for me to organize my messages and give me a chance to read part of a text when I’m at work and can’t respond, and don’t want to send a read receipt to the contact. Now, I understand I could turn the read receipts off, however if I open the message still, I’m most likely going to forget to respond later on in the day when I just skim the message.

I really hope this feature makes a comeback and I hope someone shares this frustration with me and understands what I’m going through.

Thanks.

Yes. I have the iPhone 7 Plus, however, when I hold the banner to open the preview, it will give the read receipt to the person and make the message read (when I won’t actually read all of it). If you had your messages on private and unlocked your phone in iOS 10, the banner would still be a private iMessage, but when you scroll down to the Notification Center, it would still give you the preview without actually opening the message, which is the feature that I’m talking about.
