On many iPhone models the Home screen will not rotate and not all apps will rotate. Messages is one example of an app that should rotate. If it will not, have you checked in Control Center to see if orientation lock is turned on? Open Control Center by swiping up starting from below the bottom of the home screen. The icon looks like a lock partially surrounded by a semicircular arrow.
