macOS High Sierra drops printer connection

Since upgrading to High Sierra, my iMac has recurring problems with losing the connection to my wi-fi printer. When I install the printer under Printers & Scanners system preferences, I can print to the printer at first. When I come back the next day, and printer something, it's stuck in the print queue which says it's trying to connect to the printer. This happens every time I don't use my iMac for a while. The printer is connected my wi-fi network with a good connection. Even when I can't print, I can use Safari to browse to the printer's internal setup webpages so the printer is connected to the network. I have to reset the print system in High Sierra and reinstall the printer each time. I didn't have this problem in macOS Sierra.

Here are particulars of my system:

  • iMac 27" mid 2011 version, 12 GB RAM
  • macOS High Sierra 10.13 (supplemental update installed)
  • HP Envy 4520
  • My iMac is set to never sleep
  • My HP printer is set to Energy Saver mode, but never auto power off. Waking my printer from Energy Saver mode doesn't connect it to the print queue.
  • HP printer has latest firmware
  • iMac printer setup is connected to HP using AirPrint.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), 12 GB RAM, 1TB Hard Drive

Just found a solution.

Macs like to use mDNS (multicast DNS) aka bonjour protocol to communicate with the printer.

On my Linksys router, the option is deactivated by default in the firewall, that means such protocols are blocked by the router.

Since I am printing through the wifi network created by the router (not wifi direct), the MAC and the printer can't see each other using that protocol. Interestingly, the MAC can still ping the IP address and access the web based interface for the printer, but no printing.

PC's are not using using bonjour protocol and are not affected by the default firewall setting.

The option that allows mDNS can be activated in the security section of the Linksys router, it is called "Filter Multicast", it needs to be ticked (not very intuitive), approve click OK et Voila !

I also have this problem and it is causing problems for everyone in my business because it has been affecting our print server reliability. We use PaperCut NG to keep track of our business printer usage and need to use printer sharing via Bonjour. IP address install is not an option, as PaperCut NG will not track usage via IP address. I have laptops in my environment running Yosemite, and the problem is nearly nonexistent for those laptops. Does anyone know if connecting the printer from a Windows host/server will increase reliability? Thank you for the tip to monitor the connectivity via dns-sd -B.

I am having related problems. Unfortunately I was forced to change computers, printers, operating system and WIFI service at about the same time, so it is only through this train of comments that I am confident that High Sierra is the source of the problem:

My computer — 2017 15" MBP with touchbar

(also various "iDevices")

OS — High Sierra 10.13.6

Printer — Epson WF 4640

•When I connect the printer via USB-C through a OWC dock I can (usually) print with the printer. It shows up as one of many similarly named printers. Likewise, I can scan when hardwired.

•Among the configured printers (in addition to the accretion of other people's printers from the past), I have an IP address set up which works via WiFi through my router, unless my printer has failed to connect to the router. (This problem can usually be resolved by restarting the printer, sometimes more than once. I consider this to e an Epson issue, but they have replaced this printer a few times already — once for ink linkage, other times for failed WiFI.)

•There is also a "Remote" version of the printer which can be addressed via email, even when the IP version. (Via remote I seem to be unable to control paper tray or duplexing functions on the printer.

•Numerous other iterations of the printer also appear which seem to work sometimes when both the printer and the computer have just been started.

•Our iPhones and iPads function intermittently via AirPrint, but it is hit or miss only after resetting everything.

•••Additionally, when failure occurs after the computer has awakened from sleep applications refuse to respond when I attempt to access the print dialogue, requiring a forced quit, and the system preferences print and scan preferences also fail to open, requiring a force quit.

The wake-from-sleep issues are myriad. Sometimes a low power warning or battery indicator appears for a near-eternity until I force quit. Sometimes a gray login screen appears and we can proceed.

All too often a force quit or forced restart is required to get started again.

It a beautiful computer when it works, but a time-waster when it doesn't. I need to find to go visit the genius bar!

Has anyone upgraded to Mojave and find that it all works again? I can't get it working again with High Sierra.. Last time this happened, I just left it a few hours, and then all the printers went back in to the Printer Preferences and all worked. I don't know what I did that made that just all fill in again, or if it just did it on it's own. If putting on Mojave will fix it, I'll risk putting on Mojave.

Same problem, but I'm on 10.11.6. Sometimes turning wi-fi on/off helps, sometimes I have to restart the Mac. Restarting the printer never works. The printer *always* works when printing from my iPhone. I find airplay similarly "glitchy". The LPD direct to IP address works only sometimes for me.

Oddly, even when I am unable to print, I can still see printer status through the settings utility, always gives correct status on ink etc.

Following hoping for an actual fix from Apple in an update or even in Mojave.
