Since High Sierra Upgrade - iMac Retina 5k 2015 is Freezing over and over (no beachball) - Finder doesn't show music artwork 9thumbnails or preview pane) - Samsung Smart-switch no longer connects to my S7 edge (tried updating drivers etc)....

Hi guys, new to the community here so this is my first post....

I have been having a few issues with my iMac since the new OS (High Sierra) update, can anyone please advise of any fixes to these issues....

1. Artwork not showing in Finder for music files (thumbnails and/or an image in the preview pane) all the correct boxes ARE checked in Finder options... other file types such a jpegs, docs, movies etc. ALL show artwork in finder with no problems (thumbnails & preview pane)

2. iMac randomly Freezing (with no beachball) then after random amounts of time is responsive again

3. Samsung Smart-switch no longer connects to my phone (reinstalled software & updated drivers etc still not working/connecting properly)

I also have a report from EtreCheck but can not see how I can copy and paste here with my original entry, so I will add once I figure that out (hoping I can add in a comment below or something)...

The report says my machine is "performing" at "below average" no idea why this is unless it is due to the mentioned issues I am trying to resolve... It is a relatively "new machine" & was working flawlessly until my 'HIGH SIERRA' "upgrade" then nothing but problems....

Of course I appreciate teething problems are expected with a release of a new OS - but really hoped for less than what there has been, not to mention ALL the other "issues" so far with 'High Sierra' others are discovering...

Lastly, I have already reinstalled the OS to see if that fixes the issues, as well as spoken with 'Apple' about the artwork now missing in 'Finder' (apparently they are working on it)...

I have also installed the latest recent update/patch for the OS yet still no changes with the mentioned issues...

Many Thanks,

James

The next thing you should do is uninstall iBoost Up, software like this that purports to clean and optimise your mac are more likely to compromise the performance of your mac. They tend to delete things you need.

The mac looks after itself pretty well so no anti-virus and no cleaners or optimisers.

Uninstall them according to the developers instructions, as these apps tend to install various elements throughout your mac, so a simple trash and empty is not enough.

Actually the very first thing you should do is to create a backup. To learn how to use Time Machine please read How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support.

Then, uninstall the garbage. Use the Remove Sophos Anti-Virus program. It will be installed in your Mac's Applications folder, unless you moved or deleted it. In that case, follow their uninstallation instructions here: How to uninstall Sophos Home from a Mac - Sophos Community.

Then, read Effective defenses against malware and other threats. Rule 1 of Macs is don't install junk.

The etrecheck report of Below Average is a bit misleading as it relates to how long Etrecheck took to scan your mac not really to do with the macs own performance. Mine reports the same but my mac is fine.

Your issues may be related to Sophos having quarantined some files that your mac needs to run efficiently.

So uninstall Sophos and if you can re-download High Sierra and reinstall it, no need to wipe your disc it will just overwrite everything but not remove or alter your data and apps. But to be safe make a back up first.

There are no viruses for macs, there is adware and malware which can be monitored by installing malwarebytes, you can install the trial and at the end of the 30 days you will have a stripped back free version. And the mac comes with X-Protect, macOS - Security - Apple (UK) http://osxdaily.com/2017/05/01/check-xprotect-version-mac/

Other people are having issues with finder album artwork.

Hi there thanks for your response, can I ask why you suggest removing Sophos? Thanks

Oct 14, 2017 6:36 AM in response to Eau Rouge

Hi there thanks for your advice I had used iBoost only on previous Mac's learnt that it was no good previously yet forgot to delete from my backed up HD so when I installed transferred to new Mac I forgot to delete certain apps etc.

I have now removed and have purposely kept Sophos running as it does at times flag up viruses or malware etc that is then quarantined and removed safely... I know Mac's do not suffer virus attacks like PC's but I have had some issues in the past - and seen videos on youtube that viruses do still exist for Mac's also just not as many etc so thought using Sophos would be wise.. if scanning then it slows my machine at times - but other than that I have had no other complaints with it and feel more peace of mind knowing my machine is protected...

Any suggestions with the mentioned issues?...

thanks

Oct 14, 2017 7:21 AM in response to dialabrain

thanks again... I shall consider deleting Sophos even though I haven't really discovered any "issues" with it apart from like I said previously when scanning it causes the machine to run slower than usually.

But with regards to the other issues I Have been getting since the updated OS any ideas?... or why my report says below average? or do you think this may be due to Sophos? I had NO problems before the upgrade to High Sierra so can't see how that can be the problem - I appreciate what you are all saying with regards to AV etc but surely there must be something deeper causing the issues....

thanks again for your responses...

Oct 14, 2017 8:20 AM in response to Eau Rouge

Ok thank you I will give it a try... just out of curiosity though, do you see your artwork for music files in finder on your system whilst running high Sierra?

When I raised the issue to 'Apple support' - the day after release I was advised they too had the issue & said it was most likely going to be fixed at some stage with an update from the developers - but couldn't give me any idea when that was likely to be, so I am just curious if this is effecting everyone using the new OS or an issue with my machine. I had already reinstalled again but as I said previously issues still remain. Of course I haven't yet tried without Sophos just a little wary having zero protection against "viruses"... if they exist....

thanks
