Question: Apple Photos not correcting lense distortion

Hi,

I have photos that I took with my Canon camera equipped with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm which is a very popular lense. Apple Photos doesn't seem to correct the lense distortion on my photos. Does anyone know why ?

Thanks !

MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13)

Answer:

For some lenses the lens correction seems to be included in the RAW developement, for others not. Is thelens shown correctly in the Info panel in Photos? The lens tags are not unique in the EXIF tags, so Photos will occasionaly show a wrong lens. Are you shooting RAW or JPEGs?

For JPEGs is no lens correction done in Photos at all, since the RAW developement in the camera should do it.

The photo editing extension DxO Optics Pro for Photos is offering RAW developement and lens correction for more than 250 popular cameras. You may want to check at the developers web site, if your camera and lens is supported. The list is here: http://www.dxo.com/us/photography/photo-software/dxo-opticspro/supported-cameras

The price at the AppStore is moderate - just 10.99€.

Thanks for your reply Léonie. Yes the lens is showing correctly in the info panel, and I am shooting RAW. I am trying to get a workflow with Photos to replace the one I used with Lightroom. I think Photos is getting more and more powerful and I hoped it could replace Lightroom. I will check DxO Optics Pro, thanks again !
