I airdropped some photos from my iPod to my MacBook Pro. The iPod showed that they had been sent, but I don't know where to retrieve them on the MacBook with Sierra. I opened Photos and the airdropped photos weren't there.

I found them in Downloads --- this time. Used to find them in Downloads, then when I couldn't find them, called the Help Desk and we found them filed chronologically in Photos.
Wish Apple would make up their mind(s)
Look in your Downloads folder.
Another place they are now showing up if you are signed in with iCloud on both devices and use iCloud Drive, is the Files app in iOS and the iCloud Drive Folder on Macs.
