Apple ID - old email address

My iPhone has always asked me to enter my password for my Apple ID in settings, however this has always been for my old email address which I have since changed. For the past couple of days this message keeps coming up every 30 seconds and 3 times in a row and is very frustrating when I'm trying to do something on my phone. I've tried logging out of my account, turning my phone on and off and trying to enter my password even though it won't accept it. How am I able to fix this problem? Because it is very frustrating.

iPhone 6s, iOS 10.3.3

You changed your email address. Did you formally change your Apple ID?

By asking the question above, I meant:

Did you follow the directions in the article I supplied; namely, "sign out of every Apple service and device that uses your Apple ID" before changing the Apple ID, and then "sign back in to all Apple services with your new Apple ID" once the change was complete.

I have tried to change my Apple ID as the steps say, but my old email address for my Apple ID doesn't exist anymore and I am unable to get the verification code. Is there any other way I am able to do this?

I have changed it over formally this was the only thing that hasn't changed and for some reason still won't change and comes up with my old email address constantly.
