Why does a memory appear on my phone and not on my mac?

I'm running IOS 11.0.2 on my iPhone SE, and Sierra 10.2.6 on my Mac, all up to date.

This evening, a Memory appeared on my phone. It's nowhere to be found on my Mac. iCloud is signed in
and working on both.

So, what is iCloud doing? Is it not a cloud platform accessed by multiple systems, where each device is just accessing a user's data? I could have sworn that's what it's supposed to do..

The Support documents could be a more precise: Enjoy your Memories in Photos - Apple Support

This is suggesting, that all memories will sync across the devices or the same memories will be created on all devices: (underlining done by me)

Make sure your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is running iOS 10 or later and your Mac is running macOS Sierra or later.

If you want to get the same Memories on all of your Apple devices:

  1. Set up iCloud on all of your devices.
  2. Sign in to iCloud with the same Apple ID on all of your devices.
  3. Turn on iCloud Photo Library on all of your devices that you want to use with Memories.
  4. Update your Apple TV (4th generation) to tvOS 10 or later.

Thanks for pointing that out, Léonie. That synch had never quite worked for me on Sierra or the earliest days of High Sierra, but now that my iCloud Photo Library devices have all settled down on High Sierra and iOS 11 with a common set of photos to consider, it is working much better.

I didn't notice just when that changed, button I see that it has changed. My previous experience was more like that of dirty_c, with memories neither created entirely in common nor synced well.

You could simply use "File > Export > Export unmodified Original" (enable Export IPTC as XMP) to save the favorites to a folder. Then import the favourites to your iCloud Photos library. By saving the IPTC data in an sick file you ensure that the titles, locations, and dates will be transferred correctly, even when moving the unmodified originals.

Any adjustments will be lost, but I am adjusting only the favourites anyway, and only once they are in my system library. To export only the newer originals I create a smart albums with the rules "Photo is favourite" and "Date imported is after ...".

Or use PowerPhotos to move photos between libraries. But you would need the full paid version.

I worried it was that. My photo library is huge and I have no intention of either spending weeks trimming it down or paying appple an ever increasing amount of money to store all my photos because they refuse to offer the simple ability to tune how many, or which photos are stored.

They should just create the memory on the device, and offer the ability to hit a button to sync that memory across devices. If you use more storage, fine, that’s on you. But why require every stupid photo my kid took on her iPad to be synced as well?

I'm doing it the other way round. Weeding out a library is a lot of work. I prefer to add the keepers to my iCloud Photo Library. My main photo libraries are on an external drive, and on my system drive is only a smaller selection of photos I marked as favorites. By now it has just 50000 photos, the selection of photos I want to sync across my devices. whenever I take photos they are first collected in the archive on the external drive, and the I copy he favorites to the iCloud photo library.
