Unable to type an Asterisk

I have been searching for a fix for a while with no luck. My problem is that I am unable to type an asterisk on my MacBook pro. I am fairly certain it is not a keyboard issue. To type an asterisk you need to press the 'shift key' and the '8' key at the same time. Both the shift key and 8 key work fine on my computer. But, when I press at the same time nothing happens.

I even tried enabling the virtual keyboard on my mac all of the other symbols work but not the asterisk. I did get it to work if I pull down the virtual keyboard from menu under show emoji & symbols then add asterisk to favorites and select. But, I really need the asterisk on physical keyboard for programming!

Also, I have my MacBook pro hooked up to an external monitor with bluetooth keyboard. The asterisk doesn't work on either keyboards.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
