Does macOS High Sierra run okay on Mac Mini 2014?

Hey guys.

I was wondering if there was anyone around whom has a Mac Mini from late 2014 like I do that installed the High Sierra update on it, and if you would be able to share your thoughts? Does it perform okay, are there things I will benefit from doing the update, are there any bugs?

Thanks!

Mac mini (Late 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Hi John. Thanks, I did read the advice and I was happy to update to High Sierra directly to my MacHD. However, when I came back to my Mac hours after I left it to finish the upgrade, I found that after logging in my Mac was very slow. The below picture explains why:

User uploaded file

A process running with 17.46 GB of memory?! That's nearly 5 times the size of my RAM! (4 GB) The process name being call "ccloud". Well, I rebooted my machine and thankfully that high process was gone, but now I find that when my computer is in an idle state (i.e, no apps running, all that shows is the desktop and activity monitor) the memory usage is at 2.40 GB, where as the idle state in OS X Yosemite was around 1.70 GB memory usage.

I am going to do a reboot then run a Ertecheck report for you to review if that's okay?

Thanks again!

cloudd is the process that syncs your Mac's content with all the services that use iCloud, and there are many of them. That always takes time upon upgrading macOS, and it will settle down when those services are finished. That amount of time is unpredictable because it depends on the amount of data that needs to be uploaded and your available Internet speed, among other factors.

There is nothing wrong with your Mac's RAM usage. At the time of the EtreCheck report, the swapfile was not even required. A Mac with a traditional rotating hard disk drive (as yours has) can become slow when macOS needs to offload some RAM usage to its storage, but that's not happening with yours. On a Mac with solid state storage, it's hardly noticeable.

It's very easy to determine if a Mac's performance is being constrained by available memory. Please refer to Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support. If the "Memory Pressure" graph is frequently "red" your Mac would benefit from additional memory. If not, it won't. If you wanted to install more memory refer to the Memory Upgrade Instructions in About This Mac > Memory.
