macOS High Sierra 10.13 slow graphics after battery sleep

2017 MacBook Pro 3.1Ghz

Having upgraded to macOS High Sierra 10.13, the graphics have slowed down significantly after sleep.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Close lid (default power settings)

2. Unplug from mains power

3. Wait 1 hour

4. Open lid and login

5. Try a graphics intensive app or game and notice a slow down?

Is this a known issue?

- Have a tried a clean install of 10.13.

- Have tried reverting to 10.12 (problem does not exist on 10.12.6)

The only option is to reboot.

After another week of testing, I have found that when I change my macbooks sleep mode to "sleep" instead of the default "safe sleep", this problem does not occur anymore...

Use this command to check your current sleep mode...

pmset -g | grep hibernatemode

Default is 3. I set mine to 0.

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0 - to set the desired sleep mode.

0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.

1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.

3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.

5 - This is the same as mode 1, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory (in System Preferences -> Security).

7 - This is the same as mode 3, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory.

I'm also experiencing this issue.

It was never an issue in Sierra 10.12.6, but ever since upgrading to High Sierra (10.13.0 and 10.13.1) this issue is present. I have to reboot my computer every time it's been to sleep, otherwise the graphical performance is reduced by about 70%. I have a MacBook Pro 2017 with an i7 2.9GHz, 512GB SSD and Radeon Pro 560M.

This issue is also widely documented on macrumors and on multiple gaming forums (Blizzard, WoW, Diablo, etc).
It needs to be fixed asap as this also severly affects rendering times in Final Cut Pro X byt A LOT.

Didn't have any success with different hibernate modes either. The problem is not random or dependent on GPU usage for me either.

Every time my Macbook goes to sleep for several hours GPU performance is bad until I reboot the machine.

I can boot the machine completely fresh, start no program at all and shut the lid directly after logging in -> several hours later: bad GPU performance.

The performance is also always on the same "bad" level, meaning benchmarks during this low performance state are always consistent. Seems like the GPU driver is not coming back from sleep to high performance mode again.

I can also confirm that the bug still exists in 10.13.2 on my machine.

I did some quick digging in the system report immediately after updating to 10.13.2 and found some updated kernel extensions: User uploaded file

to give some clarity, I arranged the extensions with the most recently modified at the top--today at 2:55pm being when I updated to 10.13.2 -- unfortunately as I stated before, the graphics slowdown still exists on my machine (mid-2015 rMBP 15" 2.2GHz Iris Pro Only model)

**To elaborate on my above post, I should mention that I have absolutely no idea if those recently modified (I'm assuming it was today's update to 10.13.2 that brought on the most recent modifications as the time they read as being modified is the time in which I updated to 10.13.2) kernel extensions have anything at all to do with how my Mac handles graphics--and the slowdown I experience after a wake from sleep, or extended period of use without a reboot--I'm just making an educated guess based on timing, and some of the names...To me, "AppleGraphicsDeviceControl" is likely a relevant extension when having a discussion about our shared issue--on this thread, at least.

Despite the bug still being present, the good news is a reboot still fixes the problem.

Do you people see Tim Cook using "Game, Final Cut Pro X video rendering" etc.?

I can bet whatever that Apple management does not have a clue about this.

- by "management" I am referring to the decision makers, not developers, admins or support stuff.

I use all kinds of software and OS'es and I did not notice this if it wasn't for VirtualBox with 3D

If you use 'regular' apps like office, web, viber/imessage, movies, music etc. - oh and emojis you won't notice so ...

To people recommending here to set the hibernatemode to 0 - do you folks read the manual?

(funny, one user said here "-do this" and then 3pages of users "-it isn't working" ...)

pmset --man

#1. hibernatemode supports values of 0, 3, or 25. Whether or not a hibernation image gets written is also dependent on the values of standby and autopoweroff.

#2. to disable hibernation images completely, ensure hibernatemode, standby and autopoweroff are all set to 0.

But, this is not a solution unless you use your macbook as a desktop machine!

Hi #seonguki,

how is it going now? Still no issues?

Are you putting your laptop to sleep with Radeon engaged, for example if you have WOW still running it will be engaged, in this case any version of High Sierra would work.

The machine needs to sleep with Integrated graphics. In this case I find about half the time it wakes up in a slow mood the other half it'll be fast. ...

# Oso Grande - I have not applied the 10.13.2 Supplemental Update, actually I'm still on 10.13.1, my system info looks exactly like yours.
