macOS High Sierra 10.13 slow graphics after battery sleep

2017 MacBook Pro 3.1Ghz

Having upgraded to macOS High Sierra 10.13, the graphics have slowed down significantly after sleep.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Close lid (default power settings)

2. Unplug from mains power

3. Wait 1 hour

4. Open lid and login

5. Try a graphics intensive app or game and notice a slow down?

Is this a known issue?

- Have a tried a clean install of 10.13.

- Have tried reverting to 10.12 (problem does not exist on 10.12.6)

The only option is to reboot.

After another week of testing, I have found that when I change my macbooks sleep mode to "sleep" instead of the default "safe sleep", this problem does not occur anymore...

Use this command to check your current sleep mode...

pmset -g | grep hibernatemode

Default is 3. I set mine to 0.

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0 - to set the desired sleep mode.

0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.

1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.

3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.

5 - This is the same as mode 1, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory (in System Preferences -> Security).

7 - This is the same as mode 3, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory.

For what its worth, I’m experiencing the same issue with my mid-2015 rMBP 15” 2.2ghz/iris pro/512gb

A wake from sleep on battery (not plugged in) or any extended period of use without reboot or shutdown seems to trigger a noticeable drop in frames throughout the UI and desktop environment. A reboot does solve the problem.

This is very annoying. I’m glad to see though that I’m not alone; and it’s not only my machine specs with this issue since upgrading to high sierra.

I've been floating back and forth between this thread, and a few on reddit that are detailing others' experience(s) with this particular issue with graphics and macOS 10.13(.1) and the general consensus seems to be that the performance slow down/graphics issue isn't immediate after boot up, but takes time to set in--whether it's a sleep/wake issue, or just a general "time since boot" problem..I don't know.

I can appreciate the attempts at a fix by installing updated graphics drivers, but for those of us with the dedicated only graphics (in my case mid-2015 15"/iris pro only), those fixes don't begin to address the issue. Which is why I'm lead to believe the issue at hand is more a system wide problem and not related to any specific hardware or specs. Perhaps as has been suggested on here and elsewhere; metal 2...?

These issues are overall greatly irritating, but IMO, should serve as a lesson to those of us (*presumably most of us who belong to these support threads...because, let's be honest..we are a self selecting group...) that waiting a few months and keeping an eye on the tech headlines isn't always a bad decision..

Aha, it happens also for you with Intel only graphics. Sorry to hear. And yes, sure it could be something in Metal 2 and/or the WindowServer process that needs fixing, but this is just guessing on my part. 🙂 At the same time I wonder what it is that Nvidia is doing with their Web Driver that seems to help – I mean, this is still running on the same macOS 10.13.1. Hmm….

The problem isn't the automatic switching but low performance of the dGPU. For example, I can specifically choose the dGPU in Blender and get bad performance in the aforementioned setting.

I tried disabling the automatic switch though, didn't have any effect :-(

Haven't tried the latest beta yet, unfortunately I don't have the time to do that right now. Anyone else tried it?

Yeah, it is really frustrating...

Had yet another phone support session yesterday. I literally showed the support guy this thread and others on my screen, but he didn't even bother writing anything down. Instead I am scheduled for yet ANOTHER phone call this weekend.

And before you ask, phone support didn't seem to know about this problem and couldn't fix it either. Just the usual resetting/cache deleting/os reinstalling crap they give you to keep you busy :-/

I really don't want to go through the trouble of reinstalling the OS and if I am I would surely install Sierra just to be sure it's worth it. Reinstall it's not going to fix it, this is a ****** just like root issue. Either wait with the system like this or roll back to Sierra. I don't see any worth of wasting energy in troubleshooting this anymore. I give up. $2k machine acting like this is unacceptable.
