macOS High Sierra 10.13 slow graphics after battery sleep

2017 MacBook Pro 3.1Ghz

Having upgraded to macOS High Sierra 10.13, the graphics have slowed down significantly after sleep.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Close lid (default power settings)

2. Unplug from mains power

3. Wait 1 hour

4. Open lid and login

5. Try a graphics intensive app or game and notice a slow down?

Is this a known issue?

- Have a tried a clean install of 10.13.

- Have tried reverting to 10.12 (problem does not exist on 10.12.6)

The only option is to reboot.

To update you further, I have reverted to macOS Sierra 10.12.6.

Although High Sierra promises great foundations for the future, I don't feel it's ready yet. Graphics and wake from sleep are quite fundamental issues and professionals require stability.

Looking forward to when these issues are resolved.. For now 10.12.6 is great.

Thanks,

Just throwing my hat in the ring, I had this problem on my Early 2013 MBP 15" and nothing helped to solved it except reverting back to Sierra. Don't waste your time with High Sierra. There are ZERO user features, and many low level system changes (AFPS/METAL2) which are just not finished yet. High Sierra is one massive beta test and Apple should be embarrassed by it. The latest security issue is just a symptom of that.

So... I've turned off Night Shift, restarted, installed Flux and then restarted again.

So far so good, I can even see improvements in how the system performs overall before it hit that annoying fps drop.

I suggest you try this and see if it works. I tried it before and it didn't work, have no idea if this time is fixed for 100% though.

Thanks for the info andy.

Of course that is very disappointing.

I wish we knew if Apple are onto this, are they denying it, looking at it, will it ever be fixed? Being in limbo makes a bad situation even worse.

And I certainly hope "fixed" does not mean it's just running fast - there is a huge variation in the frame rate from second to second. Many game engines work out an average in order to keep everything running smoothly - but that only works "within reason". If the variations are so great, as they are with High Sierra, even the smoothest games will become "clunky". Jerking movements and explicable "hanging" does not make for a good game experience.

Frankly this platform is now unusable for game play or game development.

Sad.

Thankfully I left one of my 4 MacBook Pros on Sierra - I just ran the same test - rock solid. Frame rate is only +/- 1 which is very stable.

And sleep vs shutdown doesn't matter it's always the same.

True. And what was I thinking!

It is OK if you only use Mail and Safari. But anything to do with games is going to be painful.

Folks, I apologize for a bit of off topic here, but don't you face with another graphics issues like strange glitches on the login screen on the Guest avatar or while playing some games some textures could start "twisting" around?

I'm just feeling that this recent macOS update also very noticeable on Radeons at all.

So my MacBook's symptoms are the same as topic starter plus glitches.

Good day everyone!

I have the same problem with graphics performance, waking up macbook after sleeping...

(Macbook Pro Retina 15" mid 2015 with Intel Iris and dedicated Radeon, macos 10.13.1)

Turning on/off "Automatic graphics switching" in the "Energy Saver" section of system options helps to solve the bug, but this is not a solution!!!

Has anyone asked Apple Support for this problem?

Dec 5, 2017 1:23 AM in response to Tightlovin

Yes, I've been on the phone with Apple several times now. They always claim that the problem is not known to Apple, the support guys always "never heard of it before". Latest advice was to do a clean reinstall of High Sierra with no user data migrated and check if the problem still exists.

I'm at a point now where I am going to call them again and demand them to check it themselves, I bet you that the problem also occurs on brand new machines... I'm sure as **** not going to risk my data to find a bug for Apple, not after paying ~3200€ for that thing!

By the way, I always point out to them that this thread exists and there are many people having this problem. But this always gets ignored.

@Tightlovin: Best double-check if turning automatic graphics switching really solves the problem, as it didn't do that for me and a few other people in here.

The Apple person I spoke with was brilliant they are the one who put me onto this thread, no denial there. Hopefully the one you spoke with will get up to speed. This problem is real.

I have 4 MacBook Pros of various sizes and ages, one is brand new. It happens on all 3 machines with High Sierra, including the new one. The 4th laptop is still on Sierra - bingo - no problem there.

Fresh install? Mine was a brand new latest model machine, after purchase I immediately upgraded to High Sierra, updated all the Apple apps, installed Xcode and opened a well known project, so far all okay. But after its first long sleep / hibernate - bang - SLO MO.

Once it goes into the slow mood turning “Automatic graphics switching ...” off does not bring it back up to speed for me. It’s too late. Only a full shutdown reboot fixes it once it has gone south.

I‘m testing out another workaround: if you put the machine to sleep with the Radeon engaged then after a long sleep it seems to retain its fast mood. To engage the graphics use a game, graphics program or Energy Saver “Automatic switching” unchecked ... So far this hasn’t failed but it’s early days.

That's good to hear that there is at least one person at Apple knowing about the problem ;-) please let us know if you get any more information out of them (in case you have a follow-up call scheduled).

I also tried switching the automatic graphics switch option off when the MacBook is in low performance mode, but it didn't bring it back to high performance for me either.

Hmm... That’s just strange. Makes me tink there's more to this problem than we think. Maybe everyone doesn't experience it? Is it related to some third party software? The 10.13.2 update did include updated graphics drives for Intel, Nvidia and AMD, so at least something has happen there.

Or so we have to wait all the way to 10.13.3 for this problem to get solved? :-/

**To elaborate on my above post, I should mention that I have absolutely no idea if those recently modified (I'm assuming it was today's update to 10.13.2 that brought on the most recent modifications as the time they read as being modified is the time in which I updated to 10.13.2) kernel extensions have anything at all to do with how my Mac handles graphics--and the slowdown I experience after a wake from sleep, or extended period of use without a reboot--I'm just making an educated guess based on timing, and some of the names...To me, "AppleGraphicsDeviceControl" is likely a relevant extension when having a discussion about our shared issue--on this thread, at least.

Despite the bug still being present, the good news is a reboot still fixes the problem.
