Limewire problems

Hi, i am having problems with limewire and as a result i tried frostwire. both refuse to load the user interface correctly, and I suspect it may be a java issue. i have posted a seperate question on the Java issue, but wondered if anyone has any guidance for limewire or frostwire for me. i have posted in the gnutella forums but never get a reply.
I have th latest version and it ran fine for a long time.
Please help if you can.
thanks experts,
Bart

Yes, Bart,

Don't use Limewire or any other P2P.

Since that advice won't have any effect: It's difficult to fix a problem
with one program by slapping another program on top of it. I suggest that you
completely remove any P2P programs that you have installed - and all
associated files -and reinstall just one. It's entirely possible that your initial
problem was simply a messed-up prefs file.

Hi, I have to say I cringed a bit at the apparent arrogance in that response.
Sadly you missed the point.
My reason for trying to use frostwire was to eliminate Limewire as a culprit, and see wether the problem also presented itself with another P2P program.
I have already deleted all P2P software from my system, and attempted reloads on several occasions, to no effect.
I realise why you said what you did, but frankly it did not help, which is the whole point of this forum isn't it?
thank you for your comments.

bart

Bart,

Humor, no matter how weak, is still humor.

Many programs leave behind traces that don't get deleted when you drag an
application to the trash and empty it. Although it won't find all the files,
Spotlight could help you find and eliminate traces left behind.
Removing the plists, downloaded files and directories eliminates another
potential source of conflicting code.

If you supplied more detail on what you did to attempt to resolve the
problem, I (and others) could offer less generic advice. Please supply as much
detail as you can about the issue and its symptoms - when and how it
started, what software you installed and changes you made to your system
before and after you noticed the problem, etc., and the remedial steps you
have taken.

It's possible that the P2P software itself is not the source of the problem. Are
any other applications showing the same symptoms?

Hi wayne, Ok before i go any further let me say that i have re-installed my "humour" module and all is now well at this end (sorry).

here goes.
I have tried the following
trashing all reference to the limewire/frostwire software, preferences included.
Re-installed Limewire.
confirmed my java installation (now running 1.5.0_06)
tested my java installation (all tests out OK)
The only thing I can think of that may have impacetd things in the first place is that I installed a program called "application enhancer". I have tried to delete all reference to this software, but i can't as it tells me it is in use when I try to empty the trash. I tried to force quit this application but it doesn't appear in the list in force quit. may not be related of course.
I have also been having problems with some chat rooms, in that the room either doesn't open or is corrupted in some way. All these sites are java based. Strangely i tried to open one with IE instead of opera, safari, or firefox, and it worked ????
I have thought for a while that this may be java based, but had no luck in posting a thread about that except that someone gave me a link to a test facility that tested out fine. i assumed that eliminated java as a problem area??

does this help at all?
thanks again,
bart

Hi bart,

See if you can 'Quit Process' of Application Enhancer from Activity Monitor.

Unsanity's uninstall procedure is:

" To uninstall Application Enhancer either:
Prior to version 2.0:
Click on APE Manager or Application Enhancer in System Preferences. Choose the Uninstall option under the Information tab.
Version 2.0 and newer:
Click on Application Enhancer in System Preferences. Click the "Troubleshooting..." button in the About tab. Click the "Uninstall Application Enhancer..." button and follow the instructions.
OR
Download the Application Enhancer installer from unsanity.com/haxies/ape run it and click uninstall.
"

Or, as you've already put some files in the trash, try Starting up in Safe Mode and empty the trash.

<uncle mode>Don't install stuff until you know how to uninstall it.</uncle mode> 😉

Good luck,

Adrian
