I am using a MacBook Pro for university, and I need to access the files on my home iMac. How can I do this over the internet?
In addition, is there a way I can also setup Screen Sharing even if the computer is unattended?
Help much appreciated!

Being a family computer is not an impediment to using Back to my Mac.
And Back to my Mac supports screen sharing.
Just use iCloud on the same Apple Id and turn on File Sharing and Screen Sharing in the home mac in System Preferences->Sharing.
Teamviewer requires that the account wanted be active on the 'home' computer before it can login to it, probably not ideal for whatever the OP wants. (I am assuming that his own account will not be active on the family computer)
Is there any other way, as it is a family computer?
There are probably 3rd party solutions that may do what you want, but I have no knowledge of them.
Maybe TeamViewer,
or, GoogleDrive,
or, OneDrive,
or, iCloud,
...
FWIW, if you store the documents you need from your iMac on iCloud you can of course have access to them from anywhere.
You could keep the files you're wanting remote access to on a cloud drive... like iCloud drive, dropbox or get a WD My Cloud external hard drive.
