When I return home however WiFi is already re-enabled in Control Center. I don’t turn it back on, but I guess since turning off WiFi in Control Center doesn’t really turn off the WiFi radio, that’s why it is still on. So this auto-join behavior is a feature, not a bug then.
Since buying a new iPhone 8 Plus it will not auto-join my home WiFi network. I tick “auto join” and when I leave and then return it is not still ticked. I suspect it has to do with the new control center WiFi switch behavior since I use that to disconnect when I leave but I’m not certain. Any ideas?

Hey REvans80,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. I can see that you're having issues with your Wi-Fi stating that it won't auto-join known networks if you leave and return to the network area. You also mentioned a crucial component regarding the functions in Control Center that appears to be the cause for this behavior. As it turns out, this is not a bug but the way this was designed to work. The link below can explain why.

Hope this helps.Disconnect from Wi-Fi networks
Open Control Center and tap
. The icon will dim and your device will disconnect from any network that you're connected to.
While Wi-Fi is disabled, auto-join for any nearby Wi-Fi networks will also be disabled until:
- You turn on Wi-Fi in Control Center.
- You connect to a Wi-Fi network in Settings > Wi-Fi.
Cheers.
