iOS 11.0.3 upgrade torpedoed my cell service?!?

I upgraded to iOS 11.0.3 from 11.0.2 on my iPhone 7 Plus the evening of 10/17 and by the afternoon of 10/18 my phone will no longer connect to the ATT cell network despite being in many different locations that normally have strong cell service. Anyone else running in to this problem?

Hi

I’m having the exact same issue with my iPhone 6 after updating to iOS 11.0.3. Tried all the troubleshooting steps I could find and spent an hour on the phone with Apple trying to fix the problem.

I think I found the solution by accident. My phone is under a third party warranty and I needed to turn off find my iPhone before returning the defective phone. After turing find my iPhone off and wiping my data from the phone, the cell service was restored. Of course I restored the phone from iCloud and some time later would lose the cell service again and try all the trouble shooing again. So far turning off find my iPhone and restarting the phone has been the only thing that will restore cell service for me.

TL;DR Try turning off find my iPhone and restarting your phone.

I am having the same problem., however I can tell you that I started having the problem after a carrier update that was pushed in late October. Ever since, my phone‘s battery drains a lot faster and I am experiencing a lot more outages in areas that I used to get signal before. Just take a look at my signal strength, and explain the fact that it couldn’t find a server available in safari:

Hi there, dkristofferson.

I see that you're not able to connect to your wireless carrier, since updating your iPhone 7 Plus to iOS 11.0.3. I'm happy to help.
To begin troubleshooting, first restart your iPhone and test it out again:
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If the issue continues, please continue troubleshooting by reading over and working though the suggested steps from the following article:
If you see No Service or Searching on your iPhone or iPad

If you see No Service or Searching on your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular), or can't connect to a cellular network or cellular data, follow these steps:

Take care!

Thanks. Have already tried these things plus going to both the Apple and ATT stores. Even after a new SIM card, my cell service is still hosed. ATT provided a carrier update this AM which restored intermittent service for an hour or so but has now failed completely again. No cell service in multiple locations around town, so it is not a single cell tower issue.

I have spent a significant part of two days dealing with this problem which I have been told by both people at Apple and ATT is affecting a subset of iPhone 7 Pluses like mine. The OS is not recognizing the SIM card which was also swapped for a new one and confirmed as good in other phones. Diagnostics have been run and every troubleshooting step has been tried short of resetting the phone to factory defaults and restoring my data from backup. An ATT carrier update restored my service for a short time but then it failed sporadically soon thereafter and then completely within two hours.

I have refused to reset the phone just yet and have decided to wait for the next update. I have too many journal and magazine apps that will require redownloading issues.

Unfortunately there is no full or image backup on an iPhone. Resetting the phone and “restoring” from backup means that one’s apps all have to reinstall from the App Store and and be reconfigured to any settings that were changed from defaults.

I am hoping that the next update will fix my problem and I hope it doesn’t take too long. I have a secondary cell phone that I will use in the interim and can use my iPhone on WiFi.

If the next update does not fix the problem, then it will be time to erase and go back to square one.

No, they were very helpful, but after trying everything, both Apple and ATT want me to reset the phone back to factory defaults and reinstall everything.

I didn’t want to do that and decided to wait for the next OS upgrade instead. If that doesn’t solve the problem then I will reset. I have heard of other instances where resetting did not solve the issue, and I do not want to invest the substantial time needed on that gamble. If there is a software bug somewhere, all the “demanding” in the world is not going to resolve the problem until the software engineers fix it.

With me, my wife, two sons, two daughters-in-law and two grandchildren, there are eight phones on IOS-11.0.3. Four are "6" units and four are "7" unit. All use Verizon service. All are functioning flawlessly and I find it hard to blame software.

I'd be inclined to hold AT&T responsible but there's no way that I can be sure.

Don't giggle at this question but is BOTH cellular data AND cellular voice acting up?

THANK YOU!!! I had a slight variant. I turned Find My iPhone off and restarted. Still no service. But then i turned it back on and backed up SMS texts started flooding in. My phone now has an ICCID number in Settings:General:About which was missing for days indicating that the software was not seeing the SIM card. I don’t know how long this will last, but hopefully if it crashes again I can repeat this process.

What made you try this ??

THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!!

I can add to this. We have 5 phones here in our house, of various varieties. We have a 5s, a 6, two 7s, and a 7Plus. All are using the latest iOS 11.0.3, and all are on AT&T. None are experiencing an issue, so I'm not sure that it is AT&T either. Most of the people that I know at the college where I work use AT&T as well, since we get a discount, and I've not heard any complaints there either.

Oct 22, 2017 6:55 PM in response to Philly_Phan

Phill_Phan, yes, both cell service and cell data were lost because the phone would not recongnize the SIM card. No ICCID line would display for the SIM card under Settings:General:About.

The fix from havok565 has allowed me to restore service, and I have called both Apple and ATT tech support to alert them to this so they stop telling people to erase their phones!!!

I have left Find My iPhone off for now. I did have one call dropped and experienced a subsequent loss of service after using the workaround the first time. I have no idea if leaving Find My iPhone off will prevent a recurrence, but it did prove to be true that one can restore service again using this method if it goes down again.

Remember that when I first upgraded to 11.0.3 it took almost 18 hours beforre my cell service died. At least Apple’s software engineers now have a hint at what to look for!!

The other take-home message is don’t let people talk you into erasing your phone if you have good reason to believe that you have not changed anything, dropped it, etc., to warrant such extreme action. The problem was clearly the with software upgrade, and I am extremely grateful to havok565 for the discovery of the woerkaround!!

Turning off the Find my iPhone worked for a bit but then it went back to no service. Earlier when restarted my phone and reinserted my SIM card my service was working again, I made a call and it went through but after 2 mins I tried again and it said Call Failed. Now it’s back to No Service.

Does anybody know if the new iOS 11.1 that’s coming out will fix this problem and when will it release ?

Oct 23, 2017 9:43 PM in response to Rgonzales3

Rgonzales3, I am in the same situation currently. My cell data was working fine, and then after about 5 calls the service crapped out completely and changing Find My iPhone no longer restarted cell service. In Settings:General:About the SIM card’s ICCID line is missing again.

I called both Apple and ATT and neither could shed any light on when this problem will be fixed.

My advice to anyone who gets cell service working again is to not take any calls. Let them go to voicemail and answer them on another phone line. At least that way you might keep the cell data working on your phone if nothing else.

Although people at both Apple and ATT thought that resetting the phone and restoring from backups would solve the problem, I have heard from others where this has not worked, and don’t want to potentially waste a lot of time. If the next upgrade doesn’t solve the issue then I will go back to factory defaults.

There have been so many assorted problem reports that I sure hope the wait is not too long!!!!

Oct 24, 2017 8:21 AM in response to dkristofferson

This problem was marked as solved but then the solution failed after a day and several cell calls as noted in my comments above.

If anyone has discovered any new ways of getting cell service backafter the Find My iPhone trick stopped working, please let me know.

Unfortunately there does not seem to be a way to turn off the Solved flag other than opening a new issue.
