Apple TV 4k HDR10 60hz 4:4:4 YES or NO?

Hi guys,

We have been trying to find out if Apple TV 4k supports HDR10 60hz 4:4:4 without any success.

Does anyone can bring some help with this?

Apple support doesn't know it either, all what they could tell me is what it says on their specs sheet which is:

"Apple TV supports: HEVC Dolby Vision (Profile 5)/HDR10 (Main 10 profile) up to 2160p"

What is that? Very poor description of what is capable the Apple TV 4k. HDR10 could be at 4:2:0, 4:2:2, 4:4:4. It could also be at 24Hz, 25Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz.. And the resolution at 2160 it is only the lines, what about the pixels? Can it get to 4096 which is what we use for cinema screens? Or only 3840 which is for TV?

Has anyone made it work at HDR10 60hz 4:4:4? The best what I got was HDR10 60hz 4:2:2 and my cables are "Premium High Speed HDMI" certified by hdmi.org and the TVs the Samsung Q7F 55".

Thanks

Apple TV 4K, tvOS 11

As Alley_Cat mentioned, there doesn't seem to be any option for 4:4:4. My understanding of 4:4:4 chroma, is it only makes a difference in PC usage, and wouldn't be of much improvement to a device used to consume media, such as an Apple TV. I have my Apple TV 4K hooked up with an HDMI 2.1 (48G) cable and it doesn't allow for 4:4:4, though it did fix my issues with 4K HDR 60 at 4:2:2. With a standard 2.0b 18Gbps cable 4:2:2 caused audio issues and forced me to use 4:2:0.

I know you were asking about HDR, but I have been having the issues & questions trying to get 4:4:4 chroma on the Apple TV 4K at 50Hz SDR & 60Hz SDR with zero success. I’ve gone round and round with Apple Teach Support, who is relaying my issues to Apple Engineering, and they seem to think I’m the ONLY USER who has this problem.

What a a relief to see that I am not alone! I have purchased multiple HDMI cables and tried multiple Apple TV 4K units. The very pricey Belkin Ultra High Soeed 4K 60Hz 18Gbps HDMI Cable (purchased from APPLE) *should* have been the solution, but it goes to 30Hz SDR with 4:4:4 chroma and then forces a downgrade to 4:2:0 chroma at 50Hz SDR, 50Hz HDR, 60Hz SDR, & 60Hz HDR.

Ironically, I purchased a Sewell SW-32875-01 Sil Silverback S6 HDMI Cable (4K 60Hz 4:4:4 18Gbps Exoskeleton Weave HEC, ARC, 3D, Gold-plated) from Sewell Direct and it worked with 4:4:4 chroma up to 50Hz SDR, but I returned it, mistakenly thinking the Apple-partnered Belkin Ultra High Speed 4K HDMI Cable *HAD* to be the one that worked as advertised, as promised, at 60Hz SDR & HDR with 4:4:4 chroma.

Nope.

I would ask each of you to call Apple & report that you are also unable to achieve the advertised resolution on the Apple TV 4K, no matter which HDMI cables you are using (and possibly, regardless of the make/model of the 4K UHD television/display). Hopefully, that will motivate Apple Engineering to find the fault and put out a fix (or recall the units).

My understanding is that HDR needs to be 10bit in order to function correctly. 4:4:4 specification under the present HDMI release (until 2.1 is incorporated at least) is 8bit use only. So with that in mind if you hook up your Apple TV 60Hz SDR you will get a 4:4:4 option under video but if you choose HDR (HDR10 or DV variety) you will need to choose 4:2:2 subsampling as your widest chroma sample. Hope this helps.

Just FYI ...as I mentioned in my post above, 4:4:4 chroma is NOT available above 30Hz with SDR with the Belkin Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable Apple is selling on their website along with the Apple TV 4K. It downscales to 4:2:0 chroma no matter what you do.

The Sewell Direct High Speed HDMI Cable I cited above goes up to 50 Hz in 4:4:4 chroma in SDR, but at 60Hz, the Apple TV 4K downscales To 4:2:0 chroma.

i have tried numerous Apple TV 4K units as well as high speed and ultra high speed HDMI cables and cannot achieve 4:4:4 chroma at 60Hz with any of them, ever.
