Can I load iDVD from snow leopard bundle to sierra without issues

I bought a new iMac to replace my broken late 09 iMac and of coarse it doesn't have iDVD. I still have the old computers original Snow Leopard iLife disk which has iDVD bundled with all the other applications and I'm wondering if it's possible to load it to my new computer without screwing up the new machine (I have an external dvd drive).

I had updated the old computer to the latest software as it came available and iDVD stayed on it, working perfectly with every new update right up to and including Sierra. My concern is with what effect loading the entire software bundle might have since loading iDVD alone doesn't seem to be an option. I'm not absolutely sure of that since fear has prevented me from trying.

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), Mac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017)

Download the demo version of Pacifist and try to use it to install the iDVD and supporting files. Then, download and apply the iDVD 7.1.2 update if the version from the installer is not 7.1.2.

Be aware that you may not get all of the themes available for iDVD which might be a blessing in that some of the newer, annimated themes don't work with Sierra and High Sierra.

It's important that you install the correct version of iDVD. Note that a few of the old themes do not work with Sierra.

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

If you are using iDVD with El Capitan or Sierra see this thread:

I just tried to install the Snow Leopard applications bundle from the applications install dvd and got this message -

These applications are either already installed on your computer or this computer is not compatible with this disc. Make sure you're using the installation discs that came with your computer.

Then I reset the computers clock to 2009 and tried again with the same result. There's no way that I can see to open the install disk beyond the "install bundle" icon to get access iDVD application

There's also a version of iMovie HD 6 that will work with Sierra and High Sierra. It's called iMovie HD 6.5.1. It's available abut halfway to the bottom of this webpage: http://www.blip3.com/home.html.

It can't find my iTunes library. Probably as I've got it on an external HD. It can access my iPhoto 9.6.1 library. Using it with iDVD one only has to save the iMovie project and then drag the project file into the iDVD window to add the movie to the iDVD project. No exporting required.

Thanks, that worked.

I'm currently viewing my completed iDVD project on TV and it looks good, not as good as the original 1080p mp4 file made on the iMovie version that came on the new computer, at 60fps (with some older 30fps clips and a few still shots), but that's to be expected. If all my friends and family could be persuaded to by media players I'd send them the original file on a thumb drive, but they can't be persuaded so they'll have to deal with lower quality - and they can use the dvd as a coaster . . .

Thanks again
