Extreme network not available to usual computers - self assigned IP??

Hi .. I know a lot about Macs, but little about Airport networks.......

For the past year we have been running 5 macs in the office no probs, admin in on my iMac.... something went crazy yesterday and we're still trying to figure it ...

All will work with Ethernet plugged into them .. when I plug the airport in and go to the Network Pane in System Prefs Location and Show at the top are the usual Automatic and Airport.. click on Configure and the usual Using DHCP is there but (and I almost sound as though I know what I'm talking about here....) the usual IP adress which is something like 10.0.1.3 is now 80.5.130.194 , subnet which is usually 255.255.255.0 is now 255.255.252.0 and the router (Airport Extreme base station) is 80.5.128.1 rather than the usual 10.0.1.1.

So .... my guess is that the airport isn't distributing the signal to the other computers (they all have full strength and all say they are connected to the usual airport network... all on 10.4.8

What's my next move.... is there a box to click .. or where do I go next?

Any help gratefully received!

intel imac duo 20", Mac OS X (10.4.8), airport extreme

Hi .. yes .... but most of the stuff makes no sense to me .....

In Airport Admin Utility:

Airport pane:

Base Station ... name is there as normal ....
Base Station Options: Only 'Enable SNMP Access' is ticked
Airport Network .. name is there as normal ...
Wireless security is NOT enabled (as normal)
Channel: 10
Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible

Internet Pane
Connect Using: Ethernet
Configure: Using DHCP
Nothing appears in the IP Address... subnet mask / router address windows
DNS servers: 10.0.1.1 (grayed out next to them is 194.168.8.100 and 194.168.4.100)

Nothing in the Domain Name or DHCP Client ID boxes
WAN Ethernet Port says: Automatic (default)

Network Pane (which is where perhaps a problem lies...?)
Diustribute IP Addresses IS Checked
Airport Client Computers: Share a single IP address (using DHCP and NAT) IS Checked
Clickable box below that shows: Use 10.0.1.1 addressing

Share a range of IP addresses (Using only DHCP) IS NOT checked

HOWEVER, when I thought this may have been where a problem was and checked the box that says:
Share a range of IP addresses (using only DHCP) begining 10.0.1.2 Ending: 10.0.1.200 it throws an alert:
Sharing a range of DHCP addresses requires the base station to be configured using static IP addresses ... AND THROWS ME BACK TO THE
Internet Pane
and the box highlighted is DHCP Client ID:

am I on the right track .... and if so, what should be in that box .....

HOPE THIS HELPS.......

My airport internet connection has been extremely erratic since I did the software update on 1/10. I notice that the airport admin utility was updated. Is there any way we can find out WHY it is on again off again? It worked just fine until I did the update. I have gone through all the hoops with my internet provider, and the connection is fine without airport..... so.................... do I want to sit on the phone for hours waiting for a technician or is there an easier way to find out what to do to reconcile the issue?

Because none of your computers can connect the issue is defiantly with the Airport.

Have you tried power cycling your Airport and the modem?

To do this unplug the Airport from the power then the modem from the power. Wait at least one minute. Then plug in the modem, wait for most of the lights to be on. Then plug in your Airport. Make sure that the Ethernet cord from the modem is plugged into the WAN port (it has the circle made of dots symbol). Wait for Airport to cycle back up. Test in Safari.

If the above doesn't work you will need to hard reset the Airport. Here is the Support Site article with the steps http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451

Follow the steps in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106858

To set the network up again use the Airport set up assistant. It will walk you through

Well, this has had me pulling my hair out ... have used this airport extreme since it was first introduced.. on a G4 and then for the past year on a Core Duo iMac, on thursday it all turned turtle - and we did nothing at all.
So, I did a hard reset as per the apple instructions .... set up a new all automatic network..... and all the same problems / messages / diagnostics are the same.

Modem / internet / ethernet works fine when connected directly to all 5 computers .. laptops / old G3 iMacs / mac mini / Core Duo iMac.

When Airport is connected to modem ... all the lights are working .. all the computers have their own IP addresses ... AEBS has the expected 10.0.1.1 address using DHCP.

After Network Diagnostics through Safari (on all machines) the Airport / Airport Settings / Network Settings / ISP buttons are all GREEN, Internet / Server buttons are red......
All say the same: This computerr appears to have a working internet connection but cannot find www.google.co.uk ... you may have typed in the wrong address.......

Moden works .. computers work .. connection to internet works through ethernet ... Airport appears to be distributing IP addresses to the other computers.... and all see the network, but none can connect to the internet.

Is the Airport Extreme Base Station the obvious culprit now..... is there a way to check that it is working properly at all........ HELP......?

..... so, after the hard reset .. even though all the computers have all their own IP addresses .. cand can see the airport network

If I enter Manual DHCP in the Netwok prefs pane and in TCP / IP I put in MANUAL DHCP and put in 10.0.1.2 (becaue the router is 10.0.1.1) .... everything goes fine, but my machine assigns itself an IP address ( in this case .. 80.5.130.194... subnet mask 255.255.252.0.... router 80.5.128.1.

Tried to assign namual DHCP (ie 10.0.1.3 , 10.0.1.4 etc.....) no go on airport because of course the AEBS isn't distributing)

What is going on......

... after pulling my hair out for a week........... NTL finally admitted there was a 'fault on a switching box connector' 2 streets away and fixed it ... and everything is now fine.

Thank goodness, it was sooooo frustrating trying to track down the fault, first pointing the figure at Airport and then at the Modem, it was only when we were not assigned an IP address when attempting to log into XBox Live that we thought maybe the problem lay outside the router and the modem ......

just shows .... thanks for input guys
