How on earth do I use the hash key!

Please can someone let me know how I use the hash key?

Please do not say alt -3 or shift-3!

Sounds like you have the British PC keyboard layout active. On that one, the # key is at the right edge of the qwerty row, no shift or alt needed.

Normally with an Apple keyboard, you want to have your input source set to British and not British PC.

Why not? Those 2 ways are the general ways of accessing it. Much like the @ $ % characters at the top of the row of numbers on your keyboard. The hash is located on top of the 3 key and is accessed by pressing shift and the number 3 on a traditionally set American English keyboard.

If that is not working for you, then you'll need to tell us what language you have your keyboard set to. What happens when you use shift + 3. What character appears.

For instance if your Keyboard is set to British english then the character a top the 3 key would be the £ (pound) symbol, and the hashtag moves to a different key.
