High Sierra Photo.app. People album gray band

I use iCloud for my photos - not sure if that’s relevant - but I’ve noticed that a gray band appears at the bottom of the key photos of some people in my People album. Anyone advise why this is so?

I'm seeing the gray band on two different kinds of faces:

  • for people albums, where Photos is still saying "updating", with only one photo for the face, and the face has been manually added
  • for people albums, where Photos cannot along the eyes with the eyes ion the other persons by shifting the photo up. Then the gray bar may be added underneath. In that case the gray bar will go away, if you pick a different key photo, where the face is farer away from the lower border of the photo.
