I'm not satisfied with the choices available for Photo Booth (are there any?). True, there are many things for teenagers, but I'm not one. More specifically, is there any way to change the color hues/tones/temperatures? Failing that, are there any apps that can be used with an iMac's camera to produce better results?

Photobooth is a fairly basic, fun app. It's not designed to do much more than take a digital simulacrum of old carnival photobooth strips. If you want to manipulate photos on your Mac use the Photos app. It is extensible. Beyond that, you'd want to look at Photoshop or GIMP.

To add to idrisSeabright's suggestion use the File ➙ Import menu item in Photos and import the photos from PhotoBooth into Photos where you can edit it with Photo's extensive editing tools or any 3rd party image editor from within Photos:
I have found something better, I think. I haven't yet tried any photo editors, but I have now purchased and tried an app that changes the settings on the iMac camera. The one I've tested is called Webcam Settings, and it seems to be the best free such app that I have seen. Wrong. it costs $6.99. I've struggled enough with this problem today, but tomorrow I'll be checking the two photo editors that I have downloaded; however, unless they perform sensationally, it's just more convenient to get the photo right the first time rather than fixing it later.
Free Photo Editors, that's what I should have been looking for. There are many, and now I've installed FotoJet Photo Editor. It also has another feature that I have wanted to use: adding text to pictures. So, it now looks like I'm set for the time being. Thanks for your help.
I'm lost. I've been spending the time since I last posted trying to download iPhoto and Photo, even something called "The Verge." I downloaded several versions of iPhoto, but iPhoto doesn't seem to be operative any longer. I can't do anything with "Photo." When I click on "photo.app" in Finder, I get the following:

It appears that Photos is looking for your photo library on an external drive. You need to click on open other and find the correct library on your computer.
I clicked on "open other," and. now I have FIVE images. That's not funny. Where are the rest of them?
I can recover my photos later...maybe. Right now, I'm interested in improving my iMac picture taking. Will Photos help me with that?
