I need to do an update, there is an apple id username in place and i need to change it however it will not allow me to change it to my username it only prompts me to input the password for that username

Try going to System Preferences>App Store and verify what account is present. If this is not your account you might have to make account changes outside of the App Store before you can change them for the update.
