i want to to scan documents wirelessly using my iPad and HP printer. I am able to use AirPrint with these devices, and would like the same functionality with scanning to my iPad.

Hi, please check if you have hp smart in your applications, if not download it from hp. Despite some advises here that it is impossible to scan from air printer to my iPad I just discovered it WAS possible and easy.

Unless you have an iPad app from HP for scanning, I don't think you can do it that way.
What you can do is use Notes, read below:
Use Notes on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
You can then print it with your HP printer using AirPrint.
