Epson ET 2650 scanner issue

Sporadically, when I go to scan something through the printers and scanners app in the system preferences, the scanner window hangs and all options are grayed out. If I try the Epson Scan 2 app, it says there is a connection issue. Restarting the computer fixes the issue but that's annoying. I suspect it has something to do with other users that are still logged in after using the software. Any help out there?
