Which screen is larger - the iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X?

I was impressed that the iPhone X body is smaller than the 8 Plus but supposedly has a bigger screen - 5.8” vs 5.5”.

But I read yesterday that even though diagonally it’s larger, it less wide, and the actual screen space actually is smaller than the 8 Plus. If that is true, the 8 Plus screen is actually the bigger screen.

Is that true?

Here are actual figures from https://9to5mac.com/2017/09/13/opinion-5-8-inch-display-in-a-smaller-footprint-m akes-iphone-x-an-obvious-choice/

The iPhone X actually has a slightly smaller total area. 12.8 square inches for the X, 12.9 for the Plus. Yes that’s minuscule, but to say the X is bigger is just downright wrong. Another major difference is that the X screen is 2.43 inches wide, while the Plus is 2.70. That’s significant.

and

Websites, text, photos, videos will all be bigger on the Plus because of the screen shape and dimensions. The only thing bigger on the X would be 2:35:1 movies. But 16:9 video (pretty much all TV shows, and some movies) will be bigger on the Plus.

I have used both. The screen on the Plus is wider (by 7 mm?) and keyboards, letters, and pictures are generally larger.

PhoneArena has a good discussion about the display, pixel area. But there are tons of good discussions about how the traditional aspect ratio of the Plus can provide for a larger viewing area for videos, pictures etc.

If you go full screen with the X, the outside portion of the content generally gets cut away (unless you are viewing widescreen) and occasionally written annotations on YouTube videos get removed.

If your vision is poor, the Plus will provide for a better experience for text.

After using both, it was hard to tell the difference in display quality (pixels). The X has a more contrasty display and the images are better, but they are generally smaller. The blacks and white are better but the letters on websites are generally smaller.

I like the Plus experience a tad better. But my eyes are not what they used too be and I am red, green color blind so my situation my not be applicable to you.
