Is the Apple Watch series 1 compatible with the new iOS11 download?

I downloaded the new software Monday night and my watch will not pair with the phone. The watch app is telling me it will take 5 days to download the software to my phone. I think that is a bit excessive. I can’t use my watch as the software is downloading. Is anyone else having this issue?

Yes, it is.

All Apple Watch models, including Series 1, can be updated to watchOS 4.x and paired with an iPhone 5s or newer model that has first been updated to the latest version of iOS 11.x.

I have followed the directions. My phone keeps saying it is going to take 5 days to download. That seems a bit odd to me. I have tried WiFi in multiple locations and nothing is happening.
