Transferring from iPhone 5 to iPhone 7 - Corrupt backup and error 4003

I have a new iPhone 7 to replace an iPhone 5. I created a backup of the iPhone 5 in iTunes but when I tried to restore it to the iPhone 7 I got the error about a corrupt or incompatible backup. I noticed that the iPhone 5 software is 10.3.3 but the iPhone 7 is 10.3.2 so I'm assuming this might be an issue? So I decided to try to update the iPhone 7 in itunes to latest version but that is giving me error 4003. Should I try to update the iPhone 7 software outside of iTunes? If so, do I need to set the iPhone 7 up as a new phone to get past the initial screens? I'm sure it shouldn't be this difficult. Thanks.

This has now been solved. I proceeded to set up the iPhone 7 as a new phone and not connected to a computer. Once set up I then chose to update the software to latest version which worked fine. I then reconnected it back to the computer and restored from the iTunes backup. This time it worked with no errors. So I guess this all comes down to software versions.

Your Mac / PC must run iTunes version 12.7 or later.

Yes, your iP7 must have at least the same iOS version of your previous backup.

Restoring the iP7 to factory settings (using the following support article, without making a backup because you said you have the backup of your old iP5) erases all the content of your iP7, and install a fresh copy of the latest iOS available (11.0.3).

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

Then restore iP7 from your iP5 backup.
