I have T-Mobile and I'm wanting to join the IUP for iPhone X and was wondering if I could get pre-approved in advance or if I had to do it in store on the 3rd.

Try going from the Apple Store app on an iOS device. It is letting people do pre-order steps ahead of the pre-order time. See if that will let you. I cannot attempt it since I'm already in the AUP.
It says tmobile customers not in the IUP have to go to the store to sign up.
Okay, there is your answer. Obviously something to do with T-Mobile.
