iMac 27" freezes shortly after startup . . .

Today my iMac 27" (see below) freezes within 10-15 seconds of starting up. At first I thought it might be Vectorworks 2017, which I was working with, but it also happens with Safari, etc. Cursor no longer moves, keyboard doesn't work, etc, but screen stays locked at the moment of freeze-up.

Bought the iMac last spring, and added 16GB of RAM a month ago, bringing the total to 24GB. Internal drive is 2TB Apple Fusion that came with the computer.

Tried Disk Utility, DiskWarrior, and resetting the Pram. I'm writing this on my laptop since the desktop is useless right now.

From searching the Forums it seems freezing has been a recurring problem with later iMacs. Does anyone know how I might go about finding and fixing the source of my troubles?

Thanks in advance !!!

iMac with Retina 5K display, macOS Sierra (10.12.5), 27"

To troubleshoot, try in this order:

1. Try clearing SMC by resetting it. This often solves hardware-related issues.

2. Try Safe Boot mode by holding down the Shift key at startup. Safe Boot is quite slow because the OS performs a bunch of cleanup and verification tasks, so give it time. After you're completely logged in, restart normally. If the problem returns after restart, you might have an extension conflict. Turn off all extensions via System Preferences. To isolate which extension is at fault, turn on one extension at a time, restarting in between, until you find the bad one.

3. Download EtreCheck, run and if you need help understanding the results, post the report here. EtreCheck is completely safe and won't divulge any personal information.
