What happened to dim only with music, maps when plugged in?

Recently I upgraded from ios8 to ios11. When I was on 8, one of the best features, when driving, was that if I had the power plugged in and was listening to a music or radio app or using a map app, the screen would stay at the dim level and not go black/sleep. So, if I wanted to move to the next song, I could just swipe and not have to wake up the phone first by pressing home. This was so much safer since I really didn't have to look at the phone to do this.1,

Since updating to 11, this feature seems to be gone. If I use any of those same apps, the screen goes to black regardless of the phone being plugged in. Now I have to wake up the phone to change songs. I end up using the lock screen music controls so I don't have to press home again to get to the open app. Those music controls are not as easy to use as the app's, though, because they are smaller and require more precision - can't just swipe the whole screen. Again, not as safe.

Why did they take this safer, better feature away? I can't find a way to restore functionality in any settings.

I tested the phone in my car this morning, and although it uses CarPlay, I did not use that. I did not experience any problems with the device, but given that I'm using an iPhone 7 in a vehicle that uses CarPlay, and I don't have to use the multiple of connections that you use, it may not be a fair comparison. I could use either CarPlay or the phone itself. I had to turn off Bluetooth to try and use the connection, but did not observe any problems. I'll check more later if necessary, but I think you need to rethink the method you are using to connect, since that can introduce too many ways for something to go wrong. I know you said it was working under the old iOS, but as things change in the phone system, it would not surprise me if the radio setup that you are using will not support the newer iOS without a firmware update on its own. And that may not be possible and still support the connection combination that you are trying to use.

Hi. So, my setup is lightning power to USB input on a car adapter. Headphone jack to cassette adapter in radio (I know, but the amplification is better than just using an aux in). No bluetooth. Phone is a 5S. The apps I use most are Google Play, Music (native phone app) and Spotify. And I use Google Maps most.

Get some good sleep. Thanks in advance.

Yes, that is true. But again, my setup is completely different. Even when I forced Bluetooth off and disabled CarPlay, which was a pain to try and get the device to stay away from all of that, it stayed alright. I'm not sure this is an iOS 11 issue, or a combination of the update, your radio's ability to support iOS 11, and the combination of cords and adapters that you are using the use the device.
